William LONSDALE and Mary MULLEN
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 15:55 GMT (UK) »
any info about William Lonsdale and Mary Mullen please. They were married in Devonport in June 1904? Moved to Redcar, where they both lived and died, years later. Any info relating to births, deaths, marriage and family, would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
Welcome :)
It looks as though William and Mary are on the 1911 census living in Devonport.
Using the details this would appear to be the same William in 1901

The Police Quarters, Keyham? Yard, Devonport.
(amongst many others)
William Lonsdale  s  24  Constable   born Whatley Hill, Durham ( Wheatley Hill?)

Which gives him a birth date of 1877
There is a death for
William Lonsdale aged 68
Cleveland(reg district includes Redcar)  JFM 1945  9D 542

Just a preliminary look , it seems like a good bet but you would need to check, working from what you know and possibly getting a certificate or two.

Best wishes
Cathy :)

Hi Cathy, this was very helpful. These are the people we are looking for. These are my grandmothers parents. Brillant, we are just starting out on this journey and we do not have much info, as family have died or can't remember. Not sure what we are doing or how to progress. What is the best way of getting any certificates, to do with them? This is very exciting.
Many thanks
Ray

Hi Ray,
I think William and Mary had two children (possibly more) Nora c1907 and Hilda c 1910.
Best to start with what you know for sure and work backwards, once you get back to before 1911 it should become easier as you can access the censuses 1841-1911 on a site like Ancestry or Findmypast.
www.freebmd.org.uk  is free and very useful for finding members of your family although not quite up to more recent dates yet.
Bear in mind that we ve all sent for wrong certificates before ::) especially with a common surname.
Freebmd will give you a reference and year and quarter which you can use to obtain bmd certificates from 1837 from www.gro.gov.uk  , i think they are about £9 each.
www.familysearch.org is free to use with records mainly before 1900.
It is exciting and very addictive!
Lots of help available on Rootschat, especially if you re stuck, just ask.

Best wishes
 Cathy

ps
William was born Wheatley Hill but was a constable stationed at Devonport in 1901 and 1911.
If you google The Met Dockyard Divisions 1860-1934 there is some background info.

Ray

a copy marriage certificate from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ for £9.25 will give you both fathers' names and occupations which will help you get further back.  Registered at Devonport in June quarter of 1904 volume 5b page 723.

Hi, we finally have the marriage certificate of William and Mary. John Lonsdale, father of William, was a miner and John Mullen, father of Mary was also a miner. William and Mary got married on 11th April 1904. We are trying to find who the mothers of William and Mary. Any info would be appreciated.
Many thanks
