The 1881 (EASINGTON, Durham RG11 piece 4969 folio 120 page 19) and 1891 (STOCKTON, Durham RG12 piece 4057 folio 20 page 17) censuses show William's father to be a coal miner and his mother to be called Mary.

Hi, still looking for the parents of William and Mary. William's parents are called John and Mary.  Mary Mullen's father is also called John, can't find any more details. William was an only child. Witnesses to William and Mary's wedding on 11th April 1904, are Elizabeth Rowe and William Bennett. Born father's are miners. They were married at Devonport. Thank you

If you look at the 1881 or 1891 census references I gave you - that gives William's parents birthplaces and approx. birthyear. Your next challenge is to locate William's birth certificate which will give his mother's maiden name, enabling you then to locate his parents' marriage and go back from there.

Hi
Saw this while searching and am thinking I have stumbled on a gem! A Mary Mullen was my Nana Elizabeth Mullens sister, I have never been able to pin her down. Could this be her? She was born circa 1880 Thornley co Durham, her dad was John Mullen who was a miner and my mam remembers her marrying a policeman. Interestingly, my Nana who was born 1891 went to Devonport for a while to work in service, we have never understood why Devonport.
The Mullens remained in Thornley, Mam was Jane Mullen nee Lowther, siblings were John, Thomas, Hilda, Ethel, James, Catherine, Jane and William.
My mam remembers one of Mary's children having a disability but she can't remember specifics, she thought they lived in North Durham for a while. My mam was born 1932 so not sure if these memories are correct as she didn't see much of this part of the family.
Could this be my Mary?

Hi, Thanks for your message, we believe this to be your Mary. Mary Mullen was born in 1880 in Devonport, her father was John Mullen, born 1861. John Mullen's parents were James and Ann. Mary and William had two daughters, Hilda and Nora. Not sure but we think one of Nora's children had a disability. We came to a bit of a dead end. so we have left things for a while, but it would seem that we are looking for the same family. How lovely. If you would like to know any more about Mary and the desendents, we will try to help. Thanks
