1861, Dorset
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 18:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a boy missing from the family records and would be very grateful for a check in 1861.  Here is the known family:

Samuel GIFFORD, farmer at Durweston, Dorset
Flora GIFFORD, born BROWN, wife
John Phippen GIFFORD, son aged 5

I'm hoping that there is another son Alfred Samuel GIFFORD, aged about 9, living with them.

Regards

Robin

Hi Nanny Jan

Thanks so much for checking.  Your help is much appreciated.  I'm sure that by 1871 the children will have left home anyway so I will have to make another plan.

Thanks again

Regards

Robin

Hi,

1871 has Samuel and Flora with 8 children (including a John P born 1857) and 3 servants living in Durweston.

1881 in same place but with 5 children at home (including John P) and 2 servants.

Hi Nanny Jan

Gosh, thanks for going to so much trouble.  I gather that the children include:

Flora
John Phippen
William
Margaret
Henrietta

What are the names and ages of the other three that you mention in 1871?

Sorry to ask you to do so much work.

Regards

Robin

They've been mixed up on 1861 with other families in neighbouring houses and mistranscribed. Together you have

James B Goffard    17
Samuel Goffard    16
Mary Ann Goffard    11
Garns T Goffard    9 [Garvis]
Flora J Goffard    7

the two oldest boys were b Blackford, Somerset and are also with the family on 1851  - James is listed there as James France

Hi Mabel

Thanks so much for sorting out this whole problem for me.  I now understand the family dynamics properly after being very confused about it for a long time.  No wonder Samuel was missing!

I'm so grateful for all your clever detective work.

Regards

Robin
