On a recent thread, someone commented that the fashion for wristwatches started with women, and then moved to men later.

That would be me ;D

I was thinking 1908-1910 before I saw Jim's estimate....in other words, I agree with him :)

Thank you so much for the repairs - she looks a lot better now - you folks are so talented and generous with your time!

As for the watch, was it usual in 1908 - 10 for women to wear a watch like this? Does anyone know of other photos of the era with women wearing such huge wrist watches?

It's got a solid silver case so we think it might have been a 21st birthday present from her employers as her parents weren't wealthy.

The belt is also interesting. It looks like it's got a silver buckle but what's the belt made of? It looks like it might be silver - what do you folks think?

Hi Sandie

What a fabulous photo - I love her hat!

The watch in my grandmother's photo has now been dated to 1885 via the hallmarks so it must have belonged to someone else first (and probably nobody in her family).

From what I've read, these ladies' watches were designed to be worn on fobs attached to dresses/blouses and when the wrist watch became fashionable, they moved them to the wrist but needed the huge strap!

How wonderful that you have the actual watch to have its hallmarks checked!  I wish!

To put the photo in context, here's the full image - I just LOVE the buttons on the skirts too!

Also found another rellie with what looks like her watch on too - pity though it's not very clear.
