Probate/Will
« on: Monday 09 January 12 12:09 GMT (UK) »
Could anybody tell me if they have access to any Probate/will details for either a, Jesse Thomas Bearman, b.1907 Camberwell, died 1987 Camberwell.
Or a Thomas Bearman, b.1852 Greenwich, not sure of his death.
Thanks, regards

For Jesse, you can write for a postal search. This would cost £6, including a copy of the will/grant if found.

For Thomas, you need to find his death first. What is the latest census on which you have found him?

Thank you Dawnsh very much.
Please could you tell me any similar information regarding his father, who it seems is very hard to locate on anything, ( birth, Death, Census except 1861 ).
He was a Thomas Bearman b. 1825, according to 1861 Census, living at No 1 Regent Street, Deptford, London, Kent. He married a lady named Elizabeth Salamon at Lambeth ond 1844, 4-306. To trace a will for him I cannot find a death date, as I said he seems to have vanished before and after 1861.
Any help, much appreciated.
regards

Hi

Not totally sure which Thomas Bearman you are interested in

Thomas Bearman the grandfather or Thomas Bearman the father of Jesse Thomas? Thomas Bearman senior was a stoker on the 1861 census aged 36 so difficult to track on census nights if he was likely to be at sea.

Possible death registration but his birth year slightly earlier than the age given on the 1861 census though.

Deaths Mar 1890
Bearman    Thomas 68 Greenwich 1d 764

On the 1844 marriage to Elizabeth, Thomas Bearman was a gardener and widowerer. Father John Bearman deceased farmer. Thomas signed his name with a cross. There is a Thomas Bearman with a baptism in Deptford in 1825 but his father was Thomas. On the 1861 census Thomas Bearman's wife was Eliza.

There is an older Thomas Bearman on the 1871 and 1881 censuses. In 1871 a widower and railway engine driver aged 52 born Deptford in Greenwich workhouse and in Deptford in 1881 aged 64 a lodger born Deptford and a painter.

Possible for Eliza's death registration

Deaths Jun 1865
Bearman   Eliza Greenwich 1d   380

Hi Valda,
"Thank You", for your reply, which is very interesting and more perplexing.
It was the great grandfather Thomas that I was trying to find details for, Dawnsh had kindly informed me about Thomas the grandfather.
I was about to send for marriage details, hoping it might throw up something and to check that his brides surname was Salamon and to find his fathers name, which you say is John, a deceased farmer?, the details , Lambeth ond 1844, 4-306, is this for those details ?
Another surprise was that you say Thomas was down as a widower on that marriage certificate, I cannot find him anywhere, other than the 1861 census ?
It would seem that the christian name "Thomas" followed down the generations, so I am wondering if the Baptism in Deptford in 1925 was for him ?, age is right and the area ?
The older Thomas Bearman that you mention, a widower and engine driver, might also be him, as I couldn't find any birth details for 1825, which on 1861 census may not be correct.
Lastly Valda, if the marriage lines are the one, wouldnt it say widower on the 1861 census ?
Thanks again for your help.
regards

Hi

Presuming the 1844 marriage wasn't another Thomas Bearman - the London area has a large population so always expect more than one person with the same name in the same area and your Thomas Bearman married an Eliza not an Elizabeth, he was a widower at the time of his 1844 marriage which would make him no longer a widower once married again, unless his second wife died. On the 1861 census Thomas Bearman gives his status as married to his wife Eliza.

7th October 1844 St Mary Lambeth
Thomas Bearman Full Age Widower Stockwell John Bearman Farmer (Deceased)
Elizabeth Salamon Full Age Spinster Stockwell Henry Salamon Hawker (Deceased)
Both made their marks
Witnesses Mary Mott and ? Gawler (who was the parish clerk and a frequent witness)

As they both made their marks the parish clerk would have to do the best he could with spellings from what was said to him in whatever accent it was said to him in.

27th April 1845 St Mary Magdalene Woolwich born 1st April
James Walter Bearman parents Thomas and Eliza, Godfrey Street, father's occupation labourer

One of the children's birth certificates would confirm Eliza's maiden name.

Regards

Valda
