The plot thickens the more I delve! Mom's birth certificate shows her name as being Lilian Lamb, surname  McNeill but no father's name registered.

On her baptism certificate he is named as father, William Lamb.

On mom and dad's marriage certificate he is named as the father, William McNeill, deceased.

I am tending to think not all paperwork is truthful! Am I right? LOL

You're right!

My grandfather used his own name for his father's on his marriage certificate! I'm glad I had proof of illegitimacy or I'd still be searching.

I'll have a look for William/Lamb/McNeill after I've had my second coffee  ;D

PS - you didn't say how you knew her name was Irving - I'm not finding much sign of her after the 1891with that name.

Thank you so much, I'm sure there must be something somewhere linking to him. The McNeills were a big family, both my gran and great gran had lots of brothers and sisters and I thought were well-known.. Bedtime for us kiwis now, almost 10.30pm so enjoy your coffee and have a nice day. Jean

I have a copy of a birth certificate for my gran, Eliza Jane, 20 Mar 1901, which I sent for a few years ago. But never quite thought it correct simply because the address was 30 Diana Street and I was stuck on Hedley Street for some reason. And gran's birthday was 13 March 1901 , or so we always thought. Anyway , the father's name was James McNeill and the mother Lizzie Irving.
So this brings me up to date, never quite got into it back then but am now quite keen to see where it all leads me! Goodnight, maybe catch you again tomorrow. Jean

Think on this which I've found on my second cup!

I've located her in later censuses but her place of birth changes. In 1901, I think that this might be her:

30 Diana Street*, Westgate, Newcastle
RG13/4766/99/20

James McNeil, 39, stone breaker, b. Scotland
Lizzie, wife, 26, b. Newcastle
James, son, 4, b. Scotland
Mabel, dau, 3, b. -do-
Eliza, dau, 1 mth, b. Newcastle

A download of Mabel's  Scottish birth cert has this info:

17 April 1899 Newton Quarry Cottages, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire
Mabel McNeil
Parents - James McNeil, quarrier and Elizabeth McNeil (maiden surname Irving). It says that they married May 1896 at Great Orton Cumberland

This looks as if it could be  James McNeil's death

James McNeil, aged 48
Dec q, 1910, Newcastle upon Tyne Vol 10b page 21

Trying to locate a possible birth for him in Scotland. There's a possible in Ayrshire but I'm not sure that I have the right one. Will report back later.

Why didn't they marry and a have a cert - would make it a lot easier  ::)

Reporting back.

This looks like the most likely James:

but also this is an outside possible:
