William Maddocks
« on: Wednesday 11 January 12 08:58 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for  marriage certificate details of a William Maddocks who married Mary Maguire at St Giles Wrexham in the March quarter of 1854.

Also a baptism of William Maddocks born circa 1800 in Gresford.

Hope someone can help me

Eileen

So far i have found that William was under Maddocks 1871 Census and Maddex in 1861. Both Census they are living in Cheshire.

Could he have dropped his age a little as Mary was so much younger:
Baptism;
William MADDOCKS 09 Sept 1798, Parish Church, Gresford, Denbighshire
Father JOHN Maddocks, Abode Llay
(Source FreeREG)

1881 he is born c 1800, Gresford,Cheshire!
Do you have him on any earlier Census?
Was he Married to a Elina in 1851?

Trish :)

Hi Eileen,
I have just looked over your other queries and saw you had found a William/Elin also.

Not sure if you have this;
It is mistranscribed in my opinion.

1851 Census
Chester St Mary on the Hill, Cheshire
HO107/2171/839/40`
William MADDOCK, 55, Head, Mar, Ag Lab, born Llay, Derbyshire
Elina, 57, Wife, Mar, born Nedgues, Flintshire, Wales
Magaret, 15, Daug, born Nedgues
Phebe, 11, Daug, born Nedgues
Elina, 8, Daug, born Darland, Derbyshire
Thomas, 4, Grandson, born Darland, Derbyshire

I think William is born Llay, Denbighshire and it is hard to read.
(matches Christening I found)
Elina Jnr is probably ? Denbighshire not Derby.
See what you think.
There is a Birth Reg for a Thomas Maddocks, Dec 1846, Wrexham, 27 281
+ a Female Maddocks, June 1843, Wrexham.

Hello Trish

Thank you for getting back.  I hadn't found the census for William Maddocks for 1851.  The William I have been looking for had twin daughters Elizabeth and Margaret baptised at Hope15.02.1835 giving their address as Shordley, as well as a son James who was born between June 1832 and Mar 1833 to him and his wife Ellin.  I found James on the 1851 census working at Higher Kinnerton Hall as a farm servant outdoors aged 19 giving his birthplace as Hope.

Elizabeth married John Powell also from Hope 07.09.1856 at St Mary's on the Hill chapel at Handbridge giving her father as William and one of the witnesses as James Maddocks.  Elizabeth died in December 1860 giving birth to a son James and John Powell married her twin sister Margaret at the same church 27.05.1861.  I have not managed to find a census for 1851 for Elizabeth though.  John Powell and his family were living in Higher Kinnerton on the 1851 census.

Can you also tell me where Nedgues is?

William Maddocks married  Ellen Williams at St Mary's on the Hill 10.07.1823 and one of the witnesses was called John Maddocks. Ellen must have died prior to March quarter of 1854 as he married Mary Maguire at St Giles Wrexham I think?

This is all the information I have.  It was only chance I found him on the 1881 census.  I will have to find the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census then it looks as if I am on the right track after over two years.

Hawarden say they have the records for marriages at St Giles Wrexham and also baptisms for Gresford it's just its a long journey.

Eileen

I have been trying to find your Family in other Census post 1851;

ELLEN Maddocks age 18, birth c 1843, Hope, Flintshire, Wales, is a Inmate in Female Penitentiary in Boughton, Cheshire, in the 1861 Census.

1861 Census
Brookes Court,
Chester St Mary, Cheshire
RG9/2627/54/25
William MADDEX, 60, Head, Mar, Ag Lab, born Gresford, Denbighshire, Wales
Mary, 38, Wife, Mar, born Ellesmere, Shropshire

1871 they are still in St Mary, Cheshire, under Maddocks, at the same address.

Hi Eileen,
Just a question.
Why do you think William married Mary Maquire?

William/Ellen and Family were in the Great Boughton Reg District in 1851 Census.
Also he is there 1861/1871

This is probably Ellen Death Reg, although just before ages were given unfortunately;
Ellen MADDOCKS, June 1859, Gt Boughton, 8a 231

I think this is a more likely Marriage Reg;
William MADDOX, Dec 1859, Gt Boughton, 8a 551
On the same page is a Rebecca JONES and a Mary WINDSOR

From Familysearch.Org;
Marriage, 26 December 1859, St Michael, Chester, Cheshire, England
William MADDOCKS, Father JOHN Maddocks
Mary WINDSOR or WINSDOR, Father EDWARD, Windsor or Winsdor
