Hi,
You order  the  Certificate of Competency  and Service from The National Maritime Museum , but before that- you need the cert numbers to order the cert from them . To do that you need to go to the NA and physically look through the registers to obtain the numbers to order the cert from the National M Museum (ie  it can not be done online,or any data cd's)

( if you are extremely  lucky the numbers for a  very minuscule portion  of them maybe be transcribed for an area , as was one of mine on the Welsh mariners site  - I can't  get my other 99 % of of my  Welsh master mariners numbers  until I go to the NA in person, which is not easy - wrong side of the world )

This  may explain it far better than I have done  They have all the relevant   links on the side bar

Hope that helps
Kind Regards

There are ways of finding  Certificate of Competency and Service numbers online but unless you are experienced in interpreting them  its almost an impossible task. A lot depends on when were his years of service. That is why I asked my original question in order to expediently guide artful to the correct source. Of course he may not wish to reveal details online.

NMM are closed to enquiries until at least the end of April due to refurbishment.

Incidentally there is an alphabetical index of Masters in the National Archives but it only cover the years 1845-1854. All the other pieces concerned with Masters Certification are searchable via Certificate number

To physically search these files by name would take several days, if not weeks. There is little or nothing concerning Masters Certificates before 1845

OK. Can you give us the name of the ship/boat that you have?
Boat is the correct title to either a submarine or fishing vessel. I doubt he was sailed on one of these of type vessels.
