Help please-Immigration Scot./Eng. to S.A.
« on: Thursday 12 January 12 16:00 GMT (UK) »
I'm very new to searching records related to S.A., looking for any help possible. Searching for James Dyce b. 1838 (ish), travelled to S.A. from Scotland, though I'm guessing via England, between the yrs of 1851 and 1862.
Any help is very much appreciated, thanks much.

Hi there,
It depends on what information you are looking for.  We mainly have access to civil records through our national archives   http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za. There is a will and a death notice for a James Dyce in the Cape Town repository dated 1879 and 1880 respectively.  If you want to order documents try www.eggsa.org, they offer a document service which is easier than dealing with the archives directly.   Their rates are very reasonable.
Marriages are difficult to track unless you know where they were married and we do not have access to birth records.  There is a premium site  Ancestry24.com which has quite a good collection of South African Records.
I hope you find what you are looking for. :)

Thank you :)
I have actually found the marriage and deaths records, so now I am really focused on finding immigration records, my James Dyce travelled from Scotland to S.A. probably thru England, so I am looking for passenger records, or any records of people getting on ships or off between the years of 1851 and 1862, but most records I have found are British and do not cover those specific years, so hoping for any S.A. records....

Hi,
For passenger lists to SA you can try the following:

http://sa-passenger-list.za.net

http://genealogyworld.net/rose/natal.html

http://www.eggsa.org/links_e.htm

These contain searchable passenger lists for South Africa.

Good luck
