"Nepaul" 1852 Passenger List
« on: Friday 13 January 12 07:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi, just wondering if someone would have access to the following shipping record:

Ship:  Nepaul
Arrived:  20 October 1852, Port Phillip, Victoria
Departed:  London

The passenger that I am interested in is "James Kearney" (Age given as 25 years) and if there were any other "Kearneys" on board.

I can only find the mention of it on ancestry, no image of Victorian shipping records available online and can't seem to find it elsewhere.

Would appreciate any assistance.

Regards
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,

This may be of interest.

The Northampton Mercury. 29th May 1852.

The Family Colonization Society (originated by Mrs Chisholm)  have taken up the three following ships, namely, the Scindian for Melbourne to sail 8th June; the Francis Walker for Sydney, to sail 20th June and the Nepaul, of 1000 tons, for Melbourne, to sail 1st July.

Regards,
John

Thank you both for the information that you provided.  How quick you are.  Interesting to note and will keep it in my records.  Looks to me to be a "family unit" as I was hoping there was a brother William on the ship with James and I don't think that their parents William & Rose came out to Australia with them.

I'll keep searching but keep this record on the radar.

Cheers,

Suzanne

From BDM records, it appears that Thomas and (Ce)celia came from Cork in Ireland.

Hey thanks, don't think it is my James though.  My James Kearney was born in Liverpool, England circa 1832. His parents William and Rose came from Ireland.

I've just got this feeling that my James came out to Australia with his brother William as the both married sisters from the Grimmer family.

James and William disappear after the 1841 Eng Census and James  pops up in Australia marrying in Australia in 1853.

The other members of the Kearney family are still in England in the 1851 census.

It's a confusing one I know - all of my family research seems to be.

Thanks for your help.

Yes Dee, they are the marriages.

The Grimmer family came to Australia on the "Theodore" 8 Dec 1852 - I checked the PROV records thinking that the Kearney brothers may have been on the same ship but couldn't find them, may have to go back to the library and check the microfiche.

Thank you.

James is my direct ancestor and someone Im currently finding out about.

I can confirm the two Kearney brothers marrying the two Grimmer sisters, a practice not unusual at the time, and can incidentally confirm James was in Liverpool in 1846, as I have a copy of "Nories Epitome" (a nautical almanac) signed by him with the date 1846, complete with hand drawn sailing ships, which has been passed down within the Kearney family. The question arises why would he have such a book with him unless he was on the ships crew rather than a passenger (or given his very busy life in Australia, was he just a big over achiever??).
I am puzzled by James marrying in the Church of England in Warnambool, as I was under the impression this was a Catholic family very much centred on the North Melbourne area (where he went on to be rate collector). Could this have been because the Grimmer family were C of E?
Finally I would love to follow the lead on other members of the Kearney family still in England in 1851- any ideas?
