*COMPLETED* Marriage to Birth years
« on: Saturday 14 January 12 04:35 GMT (UK) »
I have a question for you clever Rootschatters out there.

One of my ancestors, as far as I can determine, married in 1817.

He had a son in 1836, 19 years after the marriage. Is this possible?
I have been able to trace the family line from my mother with no problems to the son, and using Family Search have established the parents, and then followed with the marriage.

The son is George Chesters born in Chester, Cheshire 8 Sept 1836 to Edward and Ann
The only Edward Chesters and Ann I can locate were married in 1817 at Audlem, also in Cheshire.
As far as I can tell, George was the only child, as the 1841 census has Ann in Chester with presumably her father in law and George

Thanks for that. One of the reasons for querying was most of the rest are within the usual time between marriage and birth,  ::)and some are a bit quicker than nine months :o :o

Hi

It is certainly possible to have a child 19 years after marriage but I would have expected there to have been other children, have you found Ann in the 1851 census to find her birthplace?

Hi

Looking at the 1851 census it would appear that Ann Chesters age 48 was born in Chester and was unmarried.

Hello

If the Ann shown on the 1841 census above is the mother of George, looking at the dates she was 25 when he was born....

Comparing the marriage date of 1817 with her birth year 1806 ????

Back to the drawing board!

What is your last positive entry for George, marriage certificate /census?

Ages for adults in the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest 5 years so Ann, age 35, could be anywhere between 35 and 39. If correct it would be very tight but ages are not always accurate so could be older.

Some things to consider...

they may have had other children who didn't survive to baptism
they may have had other children who weren't baptised
they might have had other older children who by the 1841 had moved away from home
The child might be hers but not his or the child his but not hers and was being brought up as a son. No 'medical' intervention in those days so a possible solution to a medical problem

Births for women should be considered upto the age of 50. It's only recent medical advances and intervention, that women after that age have full-term pregnancies and a surviving baby.

Familysearch shows some Audlem baptisms which may be relevant to the couple who married there in 1817:

Lydia CHESTERS 26 June 1825
Ann CHESTERS 21 Oct 1827

children of Edward/Ann

Also some in nearby Wrenbury which may be relevant:

Mary CHESTERS 26 Sep 1819
John CHESTERS 15 July 1821

children of Edward/Anne
