34/35 Watergate Grantham
« on: Sunday 15 January 12 16:09 GMT (UK) »
The butcher's shop in Watergate (34/35) Grantham was owned by the Amos family during the c19; I understand that before it's demolition it might have had the sign Amos & Shepherd outside. Does anyone have a photo of the premise or know where I could obtain a copy?
Thankd Maggie B

Thanks for the suggestion. I have checked out the website and it's quite frustrating; I believe Watergate was re-named Westgate and there are 2 photos of Westgate taken in 1904.  However, they seem to be taken at no 77 and 22 and so I guess our family shop was somewhere in between! They do however provide a flavour of the area which is interesting.
best wishes

Suggest you try Google maps street view.  I sort of know Grantham so your posting caught my eye. Watergate is what was the old North Road (A1) now by-passed of course.  As I couldn't see any numbers I googled a shop name - Busy B's Bridal - and it happened to be number 35!
You say Watergate was re-named, and you could be right, but this road is called Watergate, and looks like oldish buildings.  Take a look

thanks for the suggestion about Google Maps, I have found "Busy B Bridals" at 35 Watergate. It looks as though this could be the the old butcher's shop, the building looks pretty old

False hopes, I'm afraid.

On looking at the 1901 census to verify the evidence it looks as if the houses have been re-numbered and 34 was on the opposite (east) side of the road - Mr Shepherd the butcher lived there - which matches your information.

To confirm this I looked at the west side - nos 1 - 21 and found at number 4 the Black Dog - still there, and could easily have been number 4 - Hoppers of Watergate could be no 1 - there is a big change in the architecture - next to the Black Dog was Whicharle (?) House, and this does look possibly - Piggott & Crone's looks like a 'House'.
Unfortunately the East side has been demolished, as you initially said.

You could try the Grantham Journal for a photo.
Still I had fun looking - I was married at St Wulframs church!

Thanks for all the hard work Kath. St Wulframs looks a lovely church, I hope to visit one day as various members of the Amos family are buried there.
best wishes
