On freebmd there are only 2 John Bell's registered around the right time in Lancashire

Dec 1858
Bell    John        Ulverstone    8e   535
Bell    John Richardson        Preston    8e   440

None registered first quarter 1859
One in Chorlton 2d quarter 1859 but that would be too late.

I think the two from Dec 1858 are accounted for in later census.

Perhaps he didn't know where or when he was born when he did his naturalization papers. Or he wasn't registered as John? Possibly that was a nick name or middle name?

Milly

Look like this is the John Richard son Birth Dec 1858 Preston as UK BMD website  say is mother maiden name was Richardson

Marriages Dec 1846

 Bell  John    Liverpool  20 208
Richardson  Mary     Liverpool  20 208

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Both those John Richardsons appear to be in later Census in the UK when the John we need is living with his family in USA so unlikely to be relevant.

Just a thought (and it could be a red herring) - but what about Robert Bell - mentioned in one of the other threads as witness to John and Mary's marriage 1880.

John was a printer age 21 when he married in 1880.

The family in 1881 Census living at 22 Thompson Street give occ as Compositor Printing (but they are from Wrexham and unrelated. I imagine perhaps John worked with them/lodged with them)

There is a Robert Bell - occupation Compositor Printer in 1881 census
RG11/3934/136/46

Lodger, 7 Linwood Street, Hulme, Lancashire

Edward Francis age 39
Martha Francis   age 38
Robert Bell   age 23 - born Carlisle
Thomas Smith   age 21

I wonder if this is John's brother? And if so - perhaps John was born in Carlisle?

Maybe down as John Ball in census or BMD index

There's a marriage for Robert Bell to Elizabeth Morris

Jun 1880   Prestwich    8d   537

Could be them? Finding them on 1881 census might be helpful. Then we could try tracing Robert back to childhood.

(Note: They are not the Robert  and Elizabeth in Blackburn as I have found them on familysearch and she has a different maiden name)

The printer Robert mentioned earlier in 1881 born Carlisle is unmarried in 1881 which isn't helpful ::)

I wonder if they emigrated to USA too?

I have no clue. I did reconnect with a cousin who lives here in Massachusetts. She is descended from Johns oldest son, Thomas.

I would like to thank you all for your help! I somehow managed to hit a gold mine last night. Still not sure about Johns birth info BUT I stumbled across his fathers death in England in 1890. Turns out he was born in Ireland and it looks like he was married to a Catherine. I've managed to find Johns brothers (Robert included who did immigrate to US with Elizabeth, again thank you all for your help!!!
