Balworth, Notts. given as place of birth in 1871 London Census?
« on: Thursday 12 May 05 12:21 BST (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
Could some knowledgeable person tell me what is the most likely location for a place transcribed as "Balworth, Notts," as the place of birth of an ancestor of mine, Sarah Pollard (nee Fells), b. circa 1840, in the 1871 London Census.
Very best wishes,
Keith

Hi, Bryan,
I reckon you're getting warmer by the second!  I'm afraid I don't have the original image, I'm just going on a transcript provided by a very kind fellow Rootschatter on this website.  At the moment, I'd be going with Babworth, though I'm afraid I don't know Nottinghamshire at all, belying my surname, I suppose...
Very best wishes,
Keith

Balworth is a birthplace shared with 6 others in the 1871 census. One lists as Ranby in Balworth. Apparently Balworth - not a parish - is near East Retford. 8)
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Hackstaple,
This is getting more interesting by the minute - I've even had someone contacting me through the personal message facility who tells me that there's an entry for a baptism/birth for a Sarah Fells in 1833 in Babworth.
The plot thickens, I'd better get my textbook out about end-games to make sure I don't discount any of these fascinating possibilities...

As you can see from the 1851 census details I gave you in your other thread, Ranby is listed as an area of Babworth in that year. Seems you may have cracked it!

Yes indeed,
But I can't take much of the credit - I've posed my questions and sat back and let it all happen on this amazing site.  There's three POLLARD sisters down in Eastbourne who are going to be VERY pleased to hear about all these new developments.  We share this same ancestry through my father's family...
