Mary BRADY born near Douglas 1863
« on: Thursday 19 January 12 07:21 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any information about Mary Medder nee Brady. She was born in or near Douglas, Isle of Man, in 1863. Apart from her husband and children, this is all I know about her. She left Isle of Man some time before 1880, as she had her first child in Bluff, New Zealand, to William Henry Medder. I have found a record of her death with NZ BDM, however it lists her as dying in 1936, aged 75, which would make her born around 1841.
Thankful for any help!
MEDDER - from Jersey; BRADY - from Isle of Man; DONALDSON - from Edinburgh; RUMSEY & CURRY - from London; CURTIS - from Twillingate, Newfoundland; HALVERSEN / HALVERSON - from Valdres, Norway; Collett - from Rouen, France; HUMPHREYS - from England; WHEELHOUSE - from Auckland, NZ.

From where did you get 1863 as a year of birth?

I ask because, in 1871 census, there is only this Mary that fits:
Reference RG10, Piece 5775, Folio 15, Page 13
Quilliam's Court, Conchan (aka Onchan)

Braidy, Mary Ann  Head  Widow  45  Supported by Son  b Ireland
Braidy, Robert  Son  M  15  Errand Boy  b Douglas
Braidy, Mary  Daughter  F  12  Scholar  b Douglas
Farrell, Rose  Lodger  Widow  F  58  Fruit Seller  b Ireland

That puts this Mary's birth c 1859?

If this is her, then we have this from 1861:
Reference RG09, 4417, 15, 24
3 Society Lane, Douglas, IoM

Brady, Matthew  Head  M  50  Labourer  b Ireland
Brady, Mary A  Wife  F  39  b Ireland
Brady, Patrick  Son  M  16  Coach Guard  b Ireland
Brady, Robert  Son  M  6  b Douglas
Brady, Mary A  Daughter  F  3  b Douglas
Brady, Eliza  Daughter  F  2 months  b Douglas

Brady isn't a Manx surname, and this is the only Brady family on the IoM at that time?

Purchasing the NZ Death and Marriage Certs will help, as invaluable info is contained on them in your timeframe.

Marriage Reg;
William Henry MEDDER/Mary BRADY 1880/2840

Gosh 15 Children!!

Trish :)

EDIT Death in 1936 age 75 makes Birth Date c 1861 not 1841 ;)

Also with a Patrick in the Brady Family it would appear they are Catholic.

Now excuse the confusion here but Isle of Mann Baptisms/Christenings are strange and can be under either Fathers or Mothers name or a combo;
+ your Marys is in Latin.

ROBERT Brady Christened 03 June 1855, Douglas, Isle of Man
Father Mathew Brady and Mary Ann Higggins Brady

MARIA ANNA Brady Christened 02 May 1858, Douglas, Isle of Man
Father Matthai Brady and Maria Anna Loughlin

ELIZABETHA Brady Christened 03 February 1861, Douglas, Isle of Man
Parents Matthaei BRADY and Maria Anna Higgins

Marriage;
29 August 1854, Douglas, Isle of Man
Matthew BRADY, Widowed, Father JOHN Brady
Mary Ann HIGGINS, Single, Father CORNELIUS Higgins
Another Record has her as Marianne

1851 Census
2 ? Court,
Douglas, Isle of Man
Matthew BRADY, 49, Dealer in Sundries
Margaret, 35
Rosa, 15
Burnet, 12
John, 10
Catherine, 9
PATRICK, 4
Mary, 2, Daug, born Isle of Man
Mary McLOUGHLAN, 62, Visitor, Widow, House Servant
Mary Ann SMYTH, 18, Visitor, Unm, House Servant

Everyone but Mary age 2 is born in Ireland.

I think Matthew is 59 not 50 on the 1861 Census image or dropped his age to Marry Mary!

Mathews ist Wife may have been Margaret McLoughlin as there is a Christening;

Mary Brady McLoughlin 30 May 1849, Douglas, Parents Mathew BRADY Margaret McLOUGHLIN
This Mary must have died pre 1858 as she only appears on the 1851 Census and your Mary is Christened 1858.
Mary McLoughlin from 1851 Census may be Margarets Mother
There is also a Susan Christened to them 10 April 1852 who may have died also.

Source of all these Records is Familysearch.Org.

Patrick Brady born c 1855/6 gives his POB as Down in later Census

OOHH and welcome to Rootschat :)

I had a look at the Lawson Manx BMD site (which is known to be incomplete) and can't see Mary's birth?

I am not familiar with that Site so cant explain it.
I just got interested in this because of the NZ connection (I dont usually venture on to this Board). NZ is where I was born :)

it was normal until late 19th C (even later elsewhere) for Roman Catholic records to be in 'Latin' - though not all names always rendered (translated) correctly tho Catholic practice was to require a saint's name - the handwriting in some of these records is quite poor and some care is needed but as the records post 1849 were only available on a  negative film of original record at Manx Museum it would seem they are recently transcribed as part if the iMuseum project.
any thing with a Manx Connection
