No clues on the marriage index - m Sarah Williams, 1827. and died 1857, form Greg's earlier posts. There's just nothing at all that gives any clues from any of the records so far.

I think that I'd be inclined to widen the baptism search years but we don't know where the Shropshire came from.

I've checked the newspapers that I have access to but I think the trial was a bit too early for my best local sources. It seems that quite a number of men were  sentenced to death  for murder at the same Assizes and a young girl was found guilty of givng turps to a baby,  so his felony seems to have gone unreported in the nationals.

Hello all
I am  impressed by the research expertise you so effortlessly display. I have the Shropshire information from Samuel's Ticket of leave. Two TOLs were issued to him but only the second one includes information about Native Place. Here it is:

TICKET OF LEAVE  no. 2
First Name: Samuel
Ship: Mary
Native Place: Shropshire
Trade or Calling: lab
Trial Place: Warwick Ass
District: Patricks Plains
TOL No: 31/471
Year: 1822
Shelf Ref: 4/4079
Reel No: 915

His children were Eliza Jane, Robert, Ellen, Edmund, Samuel, Maria.

I purchased a 24 hour pass yesterday to the on line British Newspapers to find info about Samuel's trial and read that same report about the baby and the turps as well. But could not find anything on Samuel, unfortunately.
I have a recollection of an English private Library or archive that will do an occasional free search of local newspapers but can't remember the name of place. I have been racking my brains about it as I have used once before in the dim past and gained a comprehensive news report from them.

The August 1802 baptism in Shrewsbury mentioned by bristolloggerheads might be a possibility. Where did that come from i wonder? Shrewsbury is in Shropshire.

Forgot to mention that if you belong to a library, you don't need to use a pay site for most of the newspapers. I think it's through Trove is Australia. Here, we just join a library and get access to all the old newspapers.

Link to Trove, if you've not got it:

http://trove.nla.gov.au/

I think it gives you access to the Gale newspaper collections

Thanks Gnu
I'm thinking the evidence for the 1802 birth date is compelling but am not prepared to rule out any other dates. The 1799 date with the mother named Sarah intrigues. The name Sarah Jane was significant in Samuel's family. Their first child was Sarah Jane but died in infancy. They later used the same name again  for their third daughter. However, the name might be significant to the mother and not the father of course. Mother's name was Sarah but I don't know where the Jane came from. I'll keep looking and thanks for the UK-genealogy site; looks invaluable.
Warm regards
Greg
