national school records 1860-1880
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 12:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for national school records for Ballyhack and Fethard areas of County Wexford for the period 1860-1880. I am not sure if they were classed as National schools during the period in question.
They may have have been administered by Church authorities at the time.
If anyone knows if such records exist and where they are located, I would be most grateful to hear from you.
Sincerely,  Tom Ahern

In Slater's 1870 there are four schools listed under the section for Fethard (on-sea). This section of the directory also covers Arthurstown/King's Bay, Ballyhack, Duncannon and Saltmills.

  Church Educational Society's School, Arthurstown
      Edward Meredith, master
  National School, Ballyhack
      Mary McCabe, mistress
  National School, Duncannon
Manin Roache, master, Mary Dowling mistress
  Parochial School, Duncannon
      Margaret McKergin, mistress

I think the National Archives may have some National School records.

The National archives has only a few Wexford NS registers and none in the area you are interested. Have you tried the County Library - in some counties the libraries have the registers.

AnnClare,
Hi, I have already been on the National Archives website and it would appear that they have no records for national schools. I have however emailed them and and asked if it would be worth my while calling there. I live in Cheshire England now but I am going to Dublin for a few days at end of February and could combine this with a visit to the archives.
I will do as you suggest and get in touch with Wexford county Library ref the national schools.
Unfortunately they closed the Heritage centre in Tagoat but the Wexford library have told me that the records from Tagoat are being processed and will eventually be available online at the IFHS site. No idea just when that will happen.
Best regards,
Tom.

the National Archive do have the records of Teachers and Monitors

Don't know if this link will work if not use National Education in Archives search box and scroll down to the 2 PDF's for school registers.
You don't have to order the registers in advance as far as I know.
