Wellington '51 &or '61 census lookup pse - Vaughan

Hi there,
I'm trying to find Robert Vaughan b. 1842 in Oldbury Worcs in the 51 and 61 censuses.  Although he was born in Oldbury, his sister Emma c. '43 was born in Wellington and this seems to be where the family comes from (And went back to) .  I'd love to find out who Robert, my gt, gt grandfather's parents are

I haven't found Robert yet but I did find Emma who was a boarder in Dawley in 1861 unmarried and working as an Ironstone picker. It looks like you will need to have them found in 1851 to get their parents.

Ann Vaughan - Daughter -14 - Coal Loader - Dawley, Shropshire
Edwin Vaughan - Son -10 - Coal Loader - Dawley, Shropshire
Thomas Vaughan - Son -7 - Scholar - Wellington, Shropshire
Levi Vaughan - Son - 9 - Scholar - Dawley, Shropshire
Selina Vaughan - Daughter - 5 - Wellington, Shropshire

I suppose it all depends on how sure you are about the date of birth and location. Anyway, what with the mention of Wellington, I thought it was worth posting the information.

Hello John,
This is interesting.  I don't know what to make of the dates as I'm fairly certain Robert had to be born around 1841 or 2 or else he was a very young father!!  Other census info. also backs up an Oldbury birth for him.  HOWEVER census dates are often unreliable eg. I notice that Henry, the father, was according to this only 13 when Sophia was born.  Also Levi and Selina are names that seem to recur in "my" Vaughans.  So thank you.  I'll hold on to this and hopefully one day it will fit somewhere into the puzzle.

Don't want to throw a spanner in the works but found this entry on FreeBMD and wondered if it relates to the family in the 1861 Census.

It's possible this was Sophia's second marriage and the children 'adopted' their step-fathers name which would explain why Henry appears to be such a young father (13?).

1851 Dawley Census (I only have transcription) has this family at 55 Old Park.

Edward Bailey 49 born Dawley, coal miner
Sophia 33 Dawley
Sarah 16 Dawley, coal miner
Robert 6 Dawley, scholar
Ann 4 Dawley
Thomas 1 Dawley

So it looks like Robert Vaughan shown in the 1861 Census was actually Robert Bailey.

Aha, thank you this makes sense!!

I think this Henry is actually the son of Thomas Vaughan and Ann nee Onions in which case it is very likely that he is either a (much) older brother or cousin to "my" Robert.  But I still cannot find Robert anywhere in either 51 or 61 to verify my guess.
