"Without the royalty"
« on: Saturday 28 January 12 11:56 GMT (UK) »
Howdy

My GGGG grandmother and her sons address is listed in the 1841 Scottish Census as  "without the royalty", Whithorn.

I gather this means they lived outside some form of boundary.  Can anyone clarify what the boundaries for Whithorn were?

Much appreciated
Sarndra ;D

Whithorn was a royal burgh and a parish, but  the parish extended beyond the boundaries of the royal burgh.  The parish contained many other places/settlements.

There is a description here:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/WIG/Whithorn/index.shtml

This page gives a list and links for places within the parish:

These map may help you with boundaries:

Fabulous Nell thank you.

Yes indeed i have used Genuki many times, great site and i looked there first that's how i got the idea it was a boundary thing, just the explanation was a tad confusing. Your one is more straight to the point and exactly what i was looking for  :P

Thanks for the links!

As an aside, incase anyone is researching the same people, GGGG grandparents were Jane TOUGH nee MCLEAN who appears widowed by 1841 aged 44.  She married James TOUGH an agricultural labourer.  Their sons Alexander TOUGH [my link] was born 1817 in Whithorn & died 18 Feb 1870 in Caulside/Cauldside Stair Hathorn Stewart TOUGH was born 1831. Information i have has them marrying on 23 April 1810 in Minnigaff but this would make Jane only 13...it's been put on the futher to research pile LOL!

Cheers

Sorry Druid, I'm afraid I don't know.  Perhaps check with the Dumfries & Galloway FHS to see if they can help you.
