Walter Lock - Saanich, B.C.

Hello,

So i was putting names in Family Search....just seeing if there was anything new,lol!!....and entered a name that appears on my aunts tree. Surprisingly, i got lucky and found a death reg of:

Walter Lock
24 Apr 1961, Saanich, BC
Born 20 July 1878, England
Father: Francis John Lock
Mother Mary Ann Roberts

Now, i didn't know there was a Canadian connection to this side of the family!
In fact, i "thought" he married in England(as Walter EDWIN Lock) - possibly to Ethel Underwood and with possible kids of Denis B(1911), Winifred I (1914), Mabel(1917).
(I say "thought" because my aunt has not yet bought this certificate - and so i am not 100% sure that its her  rellie!)

Is it possible to see if there is anymore Canadian information on this chap...?

There are two shipping records for a Walter Lock b c1878
Depart Liverpool for St John Brunswick date of arrival 20 March 1907 on the Empress of Ireland.
Age 29 estimated date of birth 1878.
Occupation is given the same as the person above on the list, who is not a Lock, Photographer.


1932 a Walter Lock age 54 born Leicester England with Harriet Lock wife age 62 born Birmingham England
departed Liverpool for Quebec arrival date 2 May 1932 Shp Duchess of Atholl. Both had lived in Canada previously from 1919 to 1932. No occupation for Walter. Address in Canada Clearview Revelstock BC

Looking at the 1881 England census the last shipping record certainly matches up with parents Francis and Mary Ann.

b. 19 May 1869, Birmingham, England
d. 15 Oct 1956, age 87 years
spouse - Walter Edwin Lock
parents - Edwin Downton and Ann Porter

went to Free BMD
marriage Quarter Jun 1909
Lock, Walter Edwin
Underwood, Ethel
Cheltenham, vol 6a, page 916


marriage Quarter Sep 1918
Harriet A. Downton
Walter E Lock
Cheltenham, vol 6a, page 1046

I couln't find a death for Ethel before the marriage to Harriet but it is possible that he would have remarried soon after a death if he had small children.

Attestation papers for Walter Lock with next of kin noted as son Harold but also Miss Downton referenced.  2nd name Edward not Edwin.
Does tie in with the dates he gave on his 1932 sailing as to his last period of time in Canada 1918-1932.

Harriet A. Lock (50) and Harold Lock (9) arrived on the Scandanavian 8 August 1919 sailing from Liverpool to Quebec.  With her husband, soldier, and destined for Revelstoke BC

Harriet Lock (56) b. Birmingham, in Canada between 1919 and 1925 along with Harold Andrew Lock (16) also b. Birmingham arrived in Canada on the Montnairn 21 Nov 1925.  Sailed from Liverpool arrived Montreal.  Canadian contact was her husband in Revelstoke and British contact was her sister Elizabeth Downton of Cheltenham.

Death in Burnaby BC for Harold Andrew Walter Lock born about 1909 and died 25 Oct 1987.

I can't believe that i dismissed the Harriet/Walter Edwin marriage  I think i must have been to stuck on finding Walter and Ethel!

Now that Harriet seems to be his 2nd wife, i can see how this fits in - although i wonder what happened with his d.o.b. His death cert states 20 July 1878 - and this year fits in with census info - whereas the C.E.F states 21 July 1887....Perhaps a typo on the last 2 digits??!!
