St Ives burial
« on: Sunday 29 January 12 16:51 GMT (UK) »
Other than Barnoon cemetery, what other burial sites are there in St Ives?

I went there recently to try and find the graves of my Phillips ancestors but couldn't find any. I refuse to believe that there were no graves at all!

I think there may have been a Methodist connection to the family - is there a Methodist cemetery near the area?

Any help appreciated! :)

Hi Bramble

Barnoon cemetery opened in 1857 and as far as I know all burials took place there....Methodist, Salvation Army, Catholic etc.

There are lots of entries in the burial book and many people did not have MIs.  Generally there were 4 burials per plot.

What dates are you looking at?

Fewell and Speller - Essex and London
Headington and Bateman - London

Purser and Cook - Hunts

Hi Bramble,
What about St la the Virgin in St Ives? The parish burial register does list a number of PHILLIPS burials.

Hi Victor,

Is there a way I could access those records online?

Barbara, the dates I am specifically interested in are between 1892-1918. I did walk all through Barnoon, but was rather puzzled to not spot a single related Phillips stone. I did post on here before about it and someone suggested it may have been because they could not afford it, but the patriarch of the family ran his own business, so I'm sure there must have been some money for it.

Thanks both!

Hi Bramble,
My records only cover the period 1813-1830 I'm afraid. You could try contacting the local family history society (fhs). FHSs are a valuable resource usually manned by volounteers who will often do a free lookup. They know their area and can possibly point you in the right direction. Try:-
Email: secretary[at]cornwallfhs.com

Hi Bramble

For that period Barnoon is definitely the right place.

If you can give me some names I will check what records are available in the Archive.  I live in St Ives so it is no problem.

Hi bramble

All those burials are recorded in the Barnoon Burial books. If you would like details let me know.

There is a transcript of Barnoon MIs on this site

http://west-penwith.org.uk/barnoon1.htm

Nothing recorded there for your people that I could see.

The St Ives Archive has recently been doing  a project on the MIs in the cemetery.  I will check what stage has been reached.  It may be a week or so.
