Apparently George married in Chester to a Ruby A S Joyner in 1926 described on Cheshire BMD as a "Chester Civil Marriage".

He would have been 48yrs old in 1926 and 20yrs older than Ruby - had he been previously married?

Thanks Carole, yes I found the Ruby Joyner birth.I've heard nothing further from the Grandaughter since she gave me the Chester marriage.Whilst it appears he was a lot older than Ruby,it doesn't appear to show on Cheshire BMD as if it was a second marriage for George. As far as earlier possible sightings of George are concerned,I have asked what George did for a living!

It wouldn't - it only shows on the females as they have 2 surnames - maiden and previous married

Even for a man's second marriage it is normally shown by the surname being underlined and an asterisk alongside the surname.

On the entries I have seen on Lancs and Cheshire BMD - the asterisk against the mans name denotes that it was a second marriage for the spouse.

1881 (I just used surname Johnson)

That entry is just underlined to show that he was either Davis or Davies - not that he had been married previously
