PHILLIPS, John emigrated to Newfoundland, Canada
« on: Saturday 04 February 12 22:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm researching my PHILLIPS family ancestry and not having much luck! This is my first time on this site for my research. My name is Nora PHILLIPS, second youngest of twelve to Michael Cyril PHILLIPS & Carmel Frances (Whelan) Phillips from Colliers, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. My parents & their siblings are deceased.

> Grandfather John Thomas PHILLIPS was born (still not sure exactly where my Grandfather was born?) in Colliers, Newfoundland, Canada - found his Baptism record as follows - Roman Catholic Parish of St. Peter & St. Paul, Harbour Main, Newfoundland, Canada...Parents names: John Phillips & Ellen McGrath;  Baptism date: 20 October 1881.

>>>My GGrandfather John PHILLIPS - DOB: February ?, 1851(2); DOD: ????; married *Ellen (MCGRATH) Phillips; her DOB: March ?, 1850(1). {*I'm not positive regarding my GGrandmother's birth details but was told she was from Colliers, Newfoundland but was born in Scotland 1850}.

>> GGrandparents John & Ellen Phillips children listed as: William DOB:1878/DOD: ????; James A. DOB: 1880/DOD ???? and *John DOB: 1881/DOD: 1968 at Colliers, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada.

**I did find the following at the England & Wales Census, 1881.....

John PHILLIPS, age 29, birth year: 1852, birth place: Battersea, Surrey, England, wife: Ellen; children: William, age 3 and James A., age 1 ... *my Grandfather, John, not listed.  GGrandfather's occupation: candle packer?; address: 16 Goulden St.; census place: Battersea, Surrey, England; family history library film: 1341149; national archives ref: RG11; piece/folio: 644/19 and page number: 31.

I am looking to confirm these details as well other family heritage/ancestry information. When/Why/How they left England and emigrated to Newfoundland and details/info regarding my GGGrandparents???

Kindest regards,
Nora :)

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Are you sure you have the right 1881 family as this is the same family in 1891 and they do not have a son John b 1881/82 but William is John William

All b Battersea except Ellen

John Phillips 39 packer at candle factory
Ellen   40  b Scotland
John W   13 John William per baptism
James A   11  James Albert
Ethel Phillips 2

It's possible that John married Ellen Manderson in 1876 in Scotland.  Banns were read in May 1876 at St Mary's Battersea but Scotlands People has a match for a marriage between John Phillips and Ellen Manderson in 1876

John &  Ellen's children were all baptised at St Mary's Battersea

The family found in Surrey in 1881 and 1891 is also traceable in the same place in 1901 so it really doesn't look like it is your family.

What appears to be your family is in the 1921 Nfld census at ... ngb.chebucto.org ... (having probs with links today). The parents are living with John (b. 1881 Colliers) and give their birthplaces as Colliers.

In view of the info found about the family in Surrey, perhaps you might want to look for a marriage for John and Ellen in the parish records where you found John's baptism, and also for siblings for John. Other links in the above website indicate there are McGrath families about in earlier years as well as Phillips families.

This website has free BMD records for Newfoundland. The records are not yet indexed so you will need to go through page by page ... familysearch.org ... (sorry, this link won't post for me today either). Scroll down to Canada then to Newfoundland.

Polarbear?? Wow, that was quick, thank you! While I wasn't 100% sure of the details I've been finding or was sent by someone else, I've just recently found the following:

> GGrandparents Marriage Record: John *PHILIPS & Ellen MCGRATH, Colliers, Newfoundland date: November 27, 1878; Witnesses: Patrick Grace & Bridget Shea found in Marriage Records (1857 - 1906) R. C. Parish St. Peter & St. Paul, Harbour Main, Newfoundland. {*Note: Although the last name spelled here is P H I L I P S, we spell our family name as P H I L L I P S}.

>> Grandfather's Baptism Record: John Thomas PHILlIPPS; Parents Name(s): John PHILLIPS & Ellen (MCGRATH); Residence: Colliers; Date of Baptism: 20 Oct 1881.

>> In a 1921 Census for this area/district I found both my GGrandparents, John PHILIPS (Birth-1852/Feb.) & Ellen (Birth-1851/March) with my Grandparents, John PHILIPS (Birth-1881/Oct.) & Margaret (Birth-1882/Feb.) with 8 of their then born children - my Father, Michael Cyril, was born in October 1922.

**I DO NOT have Birth or other details on my GGrandparents John PHILIPS(PHILLIPS) or Ellen MCGRATH. However, I have found other names that may be related: Edward PHILIPS (Birth-1854) and Thomas PHILIPS (Birth-1861).

***Also other names in Baptism Records for: Margaret Elizabeth PHILIPS d/o John PHILIPS & Margaret Grace; Date: 25 Aug 1861; Juliann PHILIPS d/o George PHILIPS & Catherine Kinsella; Date: 09 Feb 1862; William PHILIPS s/o John PHILIPS & Margaret Grace; Date: 26 Oct 1862; Susanna PHILIPS d /o George PHILIPS & Cahterine Kinsella; Date: 04 Aug 1863; Elizabeth d/o George PHILIPS & Kate/Catherine Kinsella; Date: 14 Dec 1864; and Thomas Joseph PHILIPS s/o John PHILIPS & Margaret Grace.

Would you know, or could possibly find, any details of the names & if/how related?? I have no other details regarding my GGrandfather John PHILIPS/PHILLIPS, i.e. where he came from, either emigrating from England or moved from other area of Newfoundland???

Again, thank you so very much for your help!!

Kindest Regards,

Nora Phillips :)

I'm afraid that if a record is not on line through the 'chebucto' website I don't have access to any other info.

Margaret McGrath as sponsor for John's 1881 baptism might be a clue.

You might try contacting the church to see if there are records prior to 1857 (I don't konw when the church was founded?) .... John's parents were apparently born prior to 1857 according to the 1921 census. If records are available they might do a lookup, especially since you have dates from the census, or they might know where the children w/h been baptized if St Peter and St Paul wasn't established yet.
