1960s Union Street Wisbech
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 19:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi all - this is a long shot probably but I am wondering if anyone has or knows of any pictures of Union Street, Wisbech, either direction during the 60s? Even 50s or 70s may do. I found one superb picture here already of a bi election crowd there but looking also for a little newer than 1912. I am trying to recreate the street for a personal photography project - particularly how W H Smith and the adjoining shops looked at that time. I know adjacent to Smith's was the Wisbech Advertiser and on the corner of Hill Street I don't know yet. Also any pictures of the New Inn would be great... I attach what i have produced so far - wish to make it even more accurate...

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat!

There are a few pictures of Wisbech on:

http://www.francisfrith.com/wisbech/memories/#utmcsr=google.co.uk&utmcmd=referral&utmccn=google.co.uk

Don't know if they are of any help?

Have you tried the Local History Dept, at your library?

Best wishes,

Thanks for the welcome and the good reply. Yes I have checked that and gleaned some minor information from there. I live nearby London now so on my next trip to Wisbech I will do that for sure. Thanks again :)

Hi Shinx

I posted the query about the 1912 by-election photo, and had so much help from RCers who identified the location for me.
We finally got to Wisbech earlier this week & took a photo of that part of Union Street, standing in the same spot as OH's grandfather & girlfriend 100 years ago! That doesn't help you though.

I was helped by (among many others) Dean1 who suggested I contact the assistant curator of the Wisbech Museum:

"You may wish to E-mail him a copy of the picture which will be much clearer (he is Richard Bell the Assistant Curator) and the E-mail address for the Fenland Museum is:
info[at]wisbechmuseum.org.uk (Replace [at] with @)    "

I did, and he was very helpful. He may be someone for you to contact.

A long shot - there are now a lot of old films online from the East Anglian Film Archive, there are some of Wisbech, may be something of interest to you there. Just Google the name. Fascinating films!

Good luck.

hey Pat I was reading that thread from the start and jumping up and down thinking - hey! hey! - its Union Street, Wisbech! :))  but you guys soon worked it out. Was great to see a close up of the New Inn and the passageway and some of what was, or will become, W H Smiths next door. Thanks for taking the time to reply and yes I will follow up your leads...

Hi Shinx

Just for interest - Here are the photos of Union Street we took last week, it's a bit run-down now. What we loved was the fact that on the top part of the 'board' in the arched passageway you can still read very faintly 'Isle of Ely and Wisbech Advertiser' as it is in our 1912 picture!

Happy Hunting  :)

wow perfect Pat :) love it and thank you - I never noticed the sign in the Google StreetView - now I can restore it knowing it must still have been visible in the 60s :) wonderful stuff! My picture I am making so far has been banned here as they claim its copyright  :( - my email address is * can send it to you if you like... your 1912 picture and indeed any photos you have of Union Street from the past would be great too...
