"Buckley's or None" - anyone up for a challenge
« on: Thursday 09 February 12 08:37 GMT (UK) »
William Buckley was a convict who was sent to Australia on the "Calcutta" in 1803. The Calcutta was sent to Port Phillip Bay (in the now state of Victoria) to start a new colony.

He escaped and lived for 32 years with Aborigines. You can read his story on Wiki.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Buckley_(convict)

I am reading the book The Life and Adventures of William Buckley

He says he left behind 2 sisters and a brother. I know he didn't have recognised children, but I wonder if he has living relatives from his sisters or brother.

I know we can't trace living people but I just wondered if anyone one would like to help me trace his sisters and brother to see what happened to them.

He was born in  Marton, Cheshire, England, to Eliza Buckley in 1776. No mention of a father so I am not sure if Eliza was not married or a widow.

Anyway - I hope someone is up for the challenge. Cheers, Ted

Thanks MagP. What a find. I have been reading everything I can find on the internet and there is nothing about his life in England.

We could be adding to the history books here.

Thank you so  much, cheers Ted

There is a church at Marton (St James and St Paul), its registers started in 1563 and are at Cheshire Record Office and microfilm copies are in Macclesfield Library.  Cheshire is poorly covered on IGI, so I would start the search with the Marton registers.  Sadly I can't help as I'm in Gloucestershire!

By the way, Davenham is about 20 miles from Marton ~ unlikely to be the same William Buckley ?

Thanks for that Alpinecottege,

I was born in Cheshire - on the Wirral, but I came to Australia when I was 5 and know very little about the geography.

I'm going to look for William's conviction it is the only solid peice of evidence that link to England at present.

Cheers, Ted

Thanks JM.

William says in the book that he can't remember what he was convicted for. But there are other accounts that say he was convicted for carrying fabric he knew was stolen.  So basically recieving stolen goods.

Can anyone read the trial date?  My OH says it could say 2 Aug 1802.  The Trial was somewhere in Sussex.   Not sure where, the image I am looking at does not say.

Cheers,  JM
