Morien Morgan

I believe I'm related to the late MORIEN MORGAN who married well-known writer ELAINE MORGAN (nee Floyd). They both came from the Pontypridd area.

I think Morien, who was born about 1916, was a relative of my grandfather, LEWIS LLEWELLYN REES (1891-1970). The 1936 obituary notice for my grandfather's mother, MARY ANN REES (1864-1936), of Ferndale, mentions several Morgan relatives, including an uncle, JOHN MORGAN, of Ynysybwl, and cousins REES MORGAN, Machynlleth, and J.MORGAN, Ynysybwl.

Morien was a French teacher at Aberdare Grammar School and a Spanish Civil War veteran. 

I'm trying to find a connection between these Morgans and Morien Morgan. Can anyone help please?

Have you traced your Great Grandmother's family?

Looks like she was Mary Ann Llewelyn born ca1863 Aberdare, and married Jenkin Rees in 1882 (Sep quarter)

In 1881 Mary Ann Llewelyn was an 18 year old servant in the household of Ann Edwards at 26 Maxwell St, Ferndale. The children of Ann Edwards were born in Aberdare also.

In 1891, her son Jenkin was staying with his Uncle Lewis Llewelyn and Aunt Esther Llewelyn and their family in Sunnybank, Fforchaman, Aberdare.

Therefore Mary Ann seems to have her roots in Aberdare but moved to Ferndale.

Dear Morgan

Thanks for the info about the Morgans. Some of the names match those on the obituary notice. I've now got to work out how John Morgan fits into my tree.

However, my grt grandmother was called Mary Ann Edwards. She was born 1863 in Aberdare, but her parents were West Country immigrants. She married Jenkin Rees in 1883.

Do I have the right family (with Jenkin Rees)?

I can't see a marriage in 1883 for Mary Ann Edwards and Jenkin Rees 

Do you have the marriage certificate, or a birth certificate for one of the children, e.g your Grandfather? One of these would confirm her maiden name, and the marriage certificate should give her father's name and occupation.

It seems likely that her maiden name was Llewelyn, given that it is your Grandfather's middle name, and his brother Jenkin was staying with the Llewelyn family in 1891.

Also Jenkin Rees (her son) was born in the first quarter of 1883 so the marriage probably took place in 1882.

You can find them easily in Ynysybwl on 1911 census, which is pay to view. They are likely to be the parents of Morien.

Perhaps your Edwards line was a generation further back?

I think the Morgan connection is through the Edwards line:

Maryam Edwards with the Llewelyn family in 1871, is I believe the sister of Mary Llewelyn (nee Edwards). She also appears in 1871 with her parents:

This Ann Edwards is the same person that Mary Ann Llewelyn is staying with in 1881.

In 1861, Gwenllian and Miriam are with parents Edward and Ann, plus other children were at 12 Oak St, Fforchaman, Aberdare. Also Edward's 91 year old mother Mary Edwards.

There's a marriage of Gwenllian Edwards and John Morgans in 1875

and a marriage of Mary Edwards and Lewis Llewellyn in 1863

so if this is the right connection, Gwenllian and Mary were sisters, and Mary Ann Llewelyn was a cousin of John Edward Morgan.
