This might be a daft question....
« on: Saturday 14 May 05 12:51 BST (UK) »
but when you join the army, are you allocated to a regiment anywhere in the UK or do you go to the regiment near to where you joined or lived?

The reason I'm asking is that here is a link to my dads brother http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1526490   :'( :'(

He was born and (I thought) lived in Liverpool so I thought he would have been in the Lancashire regiment...or, it says here he had a wife from Surrey, if they lived there would he have been allocated to their regiment?

Am I totally off the mark here??  I don't know how the regiment stuf works.

Not daft at all.  My grandad joined up while on a day trip to Clacton and was in the Sherwood Foresters (13th Notts & Derby).  He lived in Twickenham Middlesex.  Sort that one out! ;D

So that sounds like you are placed in the regiment in the disctrict where you joined?

You may be interested to know that those who volunteered had a choice of which regiment to join but those that were conscripted had no choice.

There is a book which deals with recruiting (I don't have a copy) which you should be able to borrow via you local library inter loan scheme if they don't have it on the shelf:

Kitchener's Army - The Raising of the New Armies 1914-1916 by Peter Simkins

Best wishes
