John BOWDEN
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 10:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm trying to find when John Bowden died. I know he was born c. 1792 in Frome and married Elizabeth Hassel in 1820 in Chew Stoke.

From census records, and from his sons marriage certificate, I know he died sometime between 1851 and 1858 as he was on the 1851 census, and recorded as deceased when Samuel (his son) married in October 1858.. but I cannot seem to find a record of him dying.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Ash

He might not have been home when he died?

3 deaths look possible:

March qtr 1854
Bristol district    vol 6a, page 8
Bowden, John

March qtr 1856
Clifton district    vol 6a, page 57
Bowden, John

December qtr 1858
Bedminster district    vol 5c, page 565
Bowden, John

Hey Shirl,

He was in Hampshire actually, but there are no deaths for John Bowden in my time frame either. (sorry if that means I've put this on the wrong board)

At the time he was living with his two sons Samuel Simpson and Albert Augustus.

John, on the 1851 census is a Lieutenant R.N.   Maybe that's a clue?

Son Samuel is a Midshipman

Hi again

There doesn't seem to be a death registered in Hampshire on freebmd so it is going to be a difficult one to pin down unless he went back to Somerset after 1851. Samuel's marriage in 1858 was registered in Bristol District so maybe that's the area they all ended back in - there is just the one death in Bristol District mentioned earlier so that looks the most promising lead so far (unless he died at sea of course!).

Good luck in tracing him
