Spence family - Hoboken in 1920
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 12:03 GMT (UK) »
Good morning Rootschatters

We are looking for an Alexander Spence, born in Ireland c. 1872, who emigrated to New Jersey.  We have him in 1905 and 1910 but not in 1920 0r 1930.

We have found one in 1920 age 48, under Alex Spencer, born 1872 in Ireland and living in Hudson, New Jersey.

Would anyone be able to find more on this record please?

Also a Cathryne S Spence born in 1917, age 3, in Monmouth, New Jersey, this might be someone esle we are searching for.

Are there any bmd records online for Hoboken from around 1888 onwards does anyone know please?

Or burials online please as we'd like to also find where they are buried.

Many thanks :)

Hi Sandra

Many thanks for finding Alex, looks like it could be him and for finding
Cathryne, who is not ours, so I can now cross her off, thank you.
Doesn't look like you got my first thank you so it's floating somewhere maybe :)

Kind regards :)

I'm not sure I have him in 1930 thinking about it, shall have to have a look in my file.

Hi Cranstone,

Your very welcome. Sorry should have said the address for Alex Spencer on the 1920 was Second Street.
Brother John was at First Street all through the Census 1900/1910/1920/1930 we found on earlier threads   ;)
Hoping the 1940 which comes out in April, might unravel some Spence family  ;)

Hi Sandra

My cousin doesn't seem to think it could be our Alex as he emigrated in 1905, unless the date on the 1920 census of 1890 is wrong, we have taken down the info. and will hang on to it just in case, but still, thank you for taking the time to look.  Yes, hopefully the 1940 census will solve a few questions as there seems to be a few children that we can't work out with John and Mary.
Kind regards :)

HI Cranstone,

Did cross my mind earlier so I checked back and found the entry for the 14th August 1906 passenger list on the Furnessia which said "returning home to brother"  ???
Alexander did also travel with sister Minine in 1905 both going to John and both said NEVER in the USA before  ???
Immigration dates can be wrong but I didn't find him in 1890  ???
Yes, the children are a mystery with John and Mary - very strange.

Hi Cranstone,

Like you, I have been chasing the Spence family from Donegal to America !  When James (b.1877) emigrated on the Columbia on 12th June 1905, he said his brother, Alexander Spence, was already there.  Then the following year, his parents also emigrated on the Columbia saying their son was already there.  Both gave an address of 53 Eastern Avenue, Indianapolis.  I have been unable to trace this Alexander on any US Census and wonder if you have ?

Are you looking for the same Alexander as me, or the one who emigrated in 1905 on the Furnessia ?

Simon

Simon, the Indianapolis city directories have Alexander Spence at 53 Eastern Ave. from 1900 through 1906.  He appears to be at 249 Eastern Ave. through at least 1920.

You can see the image of the 1914 city directory here:  http://indiamond6.ulib.iupui.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/ICD/id/6577/rec/9  Alexander, Harry, James, and Robert Spence are all at 249 Eastern Ave.  It appears that Harry is his son.

1900 Census has them at 53 Eastern:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M9M4-QGK

1910 Census at 249 Eastern:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MKPY-3YC#
