Request for help with Eastwoods in Sussex/Kent
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 13:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am posting this here - a recent private message that I was sent and I have not had chance to look at it.  Too busy with the current assessment on the genealogy course I am studying so was wondering if any of you Sussex Rootschatters out there might be able to help Caroline!  ;D

Hi

I'm new to RootsChat, so please excuse any faux pas.  I'm trying to trace the Eastwood family decscended from William & Philadelphia Eastwood of Burwash, as I am descended from their grandson John.  However, in the 1861 census both John, his wife Ann (nee Reynolds) & their daughter Phoebe, & John's parents & siblings all appear to drop into a black hole.  Have you any idea what happened to them?  I'm assuming John jr was living near Dartford, as Phoebe was born 1860 Crockenhill, & their 2nd daughter Harrient was born 1862 Hook Hill, Wilmington, Dartford, which are only about 5 miles apart.

Any pointers towards possible sources would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Caroline

Thanks

Kerry

PS I will post this thread in a pm back to Caroline so that she knows!

Hi all

Yes, John Jr was born in Kent (Dartford).  I've got them in 1881, & in 1871 where the surname is mistranscribed as "Heastwood".

Both John & Harriet (nee Jennings) & John Jr & Ann seem to disappear into a black hole in the 1861 census.  John Jr & Ann were (apparently) married in 1860, same year Phoebe was born.  I've come accross numerous "John Eastwoods" recorded in the Maidstone Assizes records, so I'm wondering if this branch of the family was lying low at theat time for some reason.

I've looked on FreeBMD and FindMyPast.

Still can't find a birth for Phoebe or Harriet.
Can't find a marriage for John and Ann either? ???

Hi all

I've come accross the name Matilda on 1871 census as well.  Some time in the 1980's there was a family tree drawn up by solicitors.  Working backwards on that, it would give Phoebe's d.o.b as 1860 - the same as for Matilda - & I have a christening record for Phoebe in 1860.  Maybe Matilda was a middle name.  Still no trace of a birth record though, or for her sister Caroline (born 1867) who was my great great grandmother.

Given the family were apparently gypseys, I'm beginning to think they weren't too bothered about the "official" registering of births & marriages at that time, & I may not find them. :-\

I shall continue though!
