hello Su,

its a nice brooch but I don't know what it is.  the gemstone could be heathergem, made from the root of heather, but I don't know how the process works to produce the stone, except the roots are compressed under many tonnage of pressure.

I've taken stuff to the local auction house before for identification/valuation, and they're generally quite helpful, so you could try that, or perhaps somewhere online may be able to identify it.  If I had to guess at its age, I would say late 19thc.-early 20thc., but I really don't know.

regards,

andy

hello Su,

of course the celts are still here :)

theres even a couple of goths here still...in corrie ;D

I've had a nosey around google and found this site with a forum, where someone might know more about your brooch.  I tapped celtic brooch in, but most of the sites are commercial ones.

let me know if you have any luck.

Thanks Andy
I'll take a browse later.  It would be interesting to know if the brooch is authentic or not.  I will have to look into it further.  It's been languishing in a jewel box for about 5 years, taken out occasionally to be worn.  You're post has sparked off my interest again now.
