Workhouse Infirmary Barnet 1919
« on: Friday 17 February 12 15:53 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather died in this infirmary in March 1919 but I have been unable to find a burial for him.  His home address was given as London Colney but I couldn't find a burial for him there.  His wife had died in 1917 and she was buried at London Colney.
Does anyone know if there would be any records for this infirmary which might indicate where people went after they had died?
In 1911 his children had been living in Finchley, Chelsea, London Colney, Hinxworth and Sandon.
Any suggestions as to where I might look would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

The nearest cemetery to London Colney which was open in 1919 looks to be the Hatfield Road Cemetery St Albans

http://www.stalbans.gov.uk/community-and-living/life-events/death/cemetery-contact.aspx

The workhouse website lists the main records surviving for Barnet workhouse - worth contacting Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies to see if there is anything else that might help.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Barnet/

If buried by the workhouse and not his family then you might want to look at the burial guide for Barnet on the London and Middlesex board (last post on this page see link) included in the London and Middlesex guide since Barnet became a London borough in 1965. The guide covers the cemeteries in the Barnet area.

Hello Vakla
Many thanks for your reply. I shall try St Albans and the Herts Archives to see if they have any information.  I am hoping to visit the Herts Archives sometime during th next couple of months.
Very grateful for your info.

Delta,
I think we might have the same ancestor in the workhouse infirmary?  From what I can tell he died in 1919 approx.  I was wondering if you were successful in finding anything on your search?

thank you.

I haven't managed to get to County Hall yet but my great grandfather was Henry Wallduck and I do have his death certificate but it doesn't tell me where he was buried.

He is the brother of my great, great grandfather.   Would it be possible for me to get a copy of the death certificate (if it has more detail than on ancestry page)?
do you have a tree in ancestry.com?  If so, I would love to see your history...
