Canadian Newspaper Archives?
« on: Saturday 14 May 05 18:23 BST (UK) »
I'm not sure if I'm posting this on the correct board, apologies if it's the wrong one.
My husband's uncle, Wallace Richards, died in Canada in 1941 while test diving a Harvard aircraft - thanks to Kenhar I have managed to get a photo of the plane he was testing.
My husbands family all remember their grandmother having photos of the funeral possession/service and a newspaper cutting which had been sent to her from Canada at the time, but no one knows where they are now.
I found his details on CWGC site and from this I managed to get details of the actual accident from the Airforce Assoc. of Canada.  They also told me that the RCAF ceased to exist in 1968 and that most of it's records were moved to the Nat. Archives of Canada and that photographs previously held at Rockcliffe Photo Unit were also moved, but they didn't know where.
I contacted the archives, and the lady was very helpful, giving me their opening times etc. so I can search the newspapers of the time, but as I live in London, England it's not so easy to visit.
Does anyone know of any sites where I can try and find the newspaper report or any photos previously held at Rockcliffe that is searchable online?

Regards
Sandie

Hi Sandie,
The Canada Aviation Museum Link might be the place.  Their website is kept up-to-date, and there is contact information.
Good luck,

Hi, this may help, I found a site called Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, it's mostly USA but there are some offers of help from Canada. I found some rellies  who had emigrated to  Canada and needed help
They are volunteers who only charge you their expenses incurred to do look ups, I have had some brilliant help, including obituary (newspaper) look ups for just a few dollars. I have also had copies of birth certs, death certs, and army records.
May be worth a try?

Toronto Star Archives.   Pay site, but very comprehensive.

I've had a quick look at the site and it looks good, but I've already contacted a volunteer at RAGK so I think I'll wait and see if they find something before I have a go.

Thanks

Steve

I had a look at the site but unfortunately it doesn't cover the area need.
What a great site though, I still had to go through some of the papers, shame there aren't sites like this to cover all areas of the globe!

Thanks
Sandie
