Pub History: Shropshire
« on: Friday 17 February 12 19:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Could anyone give me clues as to how I go about finding out the history of a pub.
My ggg grandfather Richard Cartwright- was a Saddler & Innkeeper at the Hawkstone Arms in New Street, Wem Shropshire.

TIA
Tanja

I don't know if this helps but The Hawkstone Arms, New Street, Wem, is listed in Pigot & Co.'s Directory of 1835, landlord John Lee. http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Hi  The Hawkstone was a Wem Ales pub . Wem Ales were taken over by Greenall Whitley Brewerys. Jack Hanby the  Head Brewer for Wem Ales took over the old Wem Brewery and now brews Hanby Ales.   Greenall's, I believe are a Northen Company  from Warrington!!!! (not sure).  Jack Hanby's are still based in Wem . Maybe a letter to both could help you with your quest. Good hunting BN.

The right area Bunbury is close to Nantwich and Crewe which is where her rellies came from. I'll look a little deeper.   Her name is Janet and her father is called Kenneth.
