Postmark place on postcard and approx date
« on: Saturday 18 February 12 22:53 GMT (UK) »
I hope this is the correct board for such a post. I was tossing up between this board and the photo board. (Moderator comment: moved to Photo Restoration and Dating board :) )

The photo attached is from a postcard. The post mark does not look English. Can anyone recognize it?

Also would you say the photo is about 1910 to 1914?
Is the girl aged about 10 to 12?

Hi  Dawn,

It isn't a postmark; it's probably the name of the postcard manufacturer  ;)
Best wishes, Judy :-))

Hi Dawn :)

I agree with oldtimer - it's the mark of the postcard maker  :)  Looks like "CyKo" for what that's worth.

Your date estimate looks about right, but China and Jim will be able to confirm or deny  ;)

Cheers

Added:  from a quick Google it looks like CyKo was the manufacturer of the postcard paper, which the photographer then used to print his photos onto.

"Cyko was a bromide developing-out paper, introduced by Edward Anthony in 1887. [snip] The postcard stock appears to have been available from 1906 to 1920."

Thanks for the correction everyone. It is a stamp box mark of the company.

With a bit more googling http://www.metropostcard.com/glossaryc.html says that Cyko was introduced by the Columbria Paper Company.

The only Hilda I have in my tree so far was born in England in 1902 but moved with her parents to Arizona shortly afterwards.

Would this paper have only been used in USA? or was it popular in England too?

The huge hair bow became the "must-have" fashion accessory around 1908-1910 or so.

Borderless photo postcards, with the photo going all the way to the edge of the card, up until 1915.

So your date range is about right. Other than that there isn't really much to date. Children are tough to date.

Here's my theory. It's just a theory, okay? :)

Hilda moves to America. She receives a card from Daisy in England. Her mother has Hilda's photo taken holding the card, to send back to Daisy.

Wild? Well, we see a lot of older Victorian photos here on the board featuring people (mainly ladies) holding what looks like a photo or letter. We think it's a sort of statement...I received your letter and am thinking of you...or, here I am holding your photo and am thinking of you. Sent to loved ones far away. There was a lot of emigration from England going on during Victorian times, and a lot of soldiers absent from their homes.

Hence...my theory :D

Good morning,

As no one else has mentioned her age I will take a stab at 7 to 9. Or she was quite short judging her against the chair seat. I would expect a 10 to 12 year old to be a little taller and without the bow by that age. (The experts on dress may disagree with that)
