Thomas Mitchell - Widnes
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 12:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I cannot find on either the Cheshire or Lancashire BMD, nor on Ancestry a death entry for Thomas Mitchell b 1896 Widnes. I have old notes indicating he died in 1940 2nd qrt in Widnes, but I cannot find it anywhere.

TIA
Tanja

Hi Tanja,

Not that it helps find Thomas but the Widnes registration district wasn't created until 1964 :

Kind regards,

I know how frustrating it is when you realise that your notes are not as accurate as you thought they were!! Many of us have been there. I have a note next to an entry for one of my lot where I have a date and next to it I have written 'How do I know this- prove it !!'

Probably the best way to make sure you get the right chap is to recheck your evidence  ie birth, 1901 census, 1911 census, marriages if any, birth of children if any and any newer information you have and then you might be able to narrow down his death from the many Thomas Mitchells listed all over the country. Hope you find him.

Thanks. I did re-check his birth and marriage ( he was my great grandfather). On checking with the rellies they all say he died in 1940.....some say Manchester and some say Widnes.

I still cannot find him and have no clue as to how/why I wrote that note. I have a copy of the birth and marriage certificate to Ada Hunt, but then he just dropped off the planet.

If they also thought Manchester, there's this one :

Death : March qtr, Vol 8d, Page 881
Thomas Mitchell
Birth Date: approx 1896
Aged 44 years
Registration district: Manchester

Thanks Pels.

Would I have to order the certificate to find out cause of death and exactly where he died i.e. address/place?

I'm afraid you would have to order the certificate to find the information you need. Just looked again, I should have added the death was registered in 1940 to the above post.

Fingers crossed it's the right one ! :)
