Sailsbury Family
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 20:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi, would someone be able to help me with search on a Family. I would like any information as i would like to get a insight on how the family was back then, or what stories there could be within the family.

I looked up a Samuel Sailsbury who was born 1850, Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. He later married a women called Emma Dockham also in Bedfordshire, England. Emma was born in Maine, USA.

Having looked up Samuels children with Emma; Bessie (also born in USA), Alice, Harry, Edward, Edith, and Eva, i couldnt help but notice that there where some criminal records with his name, and same place (Bedfordshire). They where 1887 and 1891. Please may someone look this up for me and tell me what crime that he could have commited and do you think that this is the same Samuel Sailsbury.

All i have for his family is that part of information, his childrens names, year of births, and his spouse's name, year birth and her parents ect.. nothing on him though. I would like any information possible so i could get a insight in the family history.

Much appericated
Andrew

Do you mean SAILSBURY or SALISBURY? I can see a Samuel Salisbury baptised in 1850 in Cranfield but no Sailsbury

1887 Rape acquitted
Jun 1891 Carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 13 years. Trial postponed
July 1891 as above Acquitted

There's no other detail which might help confirm whether it's your Samuel

You can look it up easily yourself searching for baptisms in Beds on the IGI at www.familysearch.org and birth registrations on www.freebmd.org.uk

Acquitted - found not guilty

Are you sure they married in Beds. I can't find it.  If his wife was born in Maine, USA and their first child was also born in Maine, then it seems more likely that's where they married.

In 1891 there was also a 25 year old Samuel Salisbury living and born in Bedford, a blacksmith, who is also of the right age to have been the accused rapist

i dont seem to have a marriage for them over in Englad either, i thought i did. Well that makes sense that there is no marriage for them over here.

I hate using Familysearch. ive tried over and over again with that site but cannot find much on it. Freebmd i know how to use easy. use that alot of the time.

The Bedford Gaol site at http://apps.bedfordshire.gov.uk/grd/ has a 24 year Samuel Salisbury being sentenced to 14 days hard labour in 1874 for stealing a gun cleaner.

You need to get conversant with the IGI as for pre 1837 baptisms and marriages it's the best site around for English records, and particularly for Bedfordshire. Put in Samuel Salisbury and Bedfordshire you'll find his baptism and his parents' names.

A quick search of the British Newspaper Archive (do advance search for phrase 'Samuel Salisbury' , date range 1850-1899 from Northamptonshire papers) there are a number of results about him. OK you may need to purchase some credits to read the full article.

Seems he committed this outrage on his eldest daughter Bessie & again on other daughter Edith May Salisbury, and on more than one occasion.
