Troublesome Nock's
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 20:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anybody help find a marriage of a George Nock, probalby in London around 1830-36, and then trace him of any census other than 1851?
I have him on the 1851 census as;
George Nock born around 1812 in Marylebone, London. He is a master goldsmith and indicates on this census that he is married.
With him are children;
Gertrude - aged 15 years
Evelyn aged 12 years
George Ernest - aged 7 years.

In theory, both Gertrude and Evelyn should appear with George on the 1841 census - but I can't find any trace -Help!!

Sue

Hi,

Yeah, I saw the death, which will probably be him as all the children have dispersed by 1861. The two daughters, Gertrude and Evelyn are together, Gertrude is now married and a 'Skinner'.
She was born in Pimlico, Evelyn was born in Knightsbridge, and George Ernest, by 1861 an apprentice butcher to a Thomas Spencer, was born in Kensington.

I've found this from The London Gazette, dated August 15th

August 13th, 1851.   Bankrupts.

George Nock and John Williams of 18 Frith Street, Soho, goldmiths and jewellers
to surrender the 22nd August at ten, and 3rd of October at twelve, at the court of Bankruptcy, Basinghall St. London.

Official Assignee, Mr Wm. Whitmore, 2 Basinghall St.
Attorney, Mr C B Teague 5, Crown Court, Cheapside.

Might be useful to note that William and Eliza's daughter Ellen is listed as Hellen Gertrude for her baptism in 1836 - however she doesn't marry until 1884, giving her age as 40, father William Charles

Gertrude is actually a Canning not a Skinner   - she has Canning children and is a Canning in later censuses. I can't find a marriage though
