Buntingford - pics Completed Thanks
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 22:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I'm looking for a pic of an old house (it was once a vicarage) that was in Buntingford on what is now Vicarage Road.

There's another place called "Old Vicarage" in Hare St Rd but that's not the same house (it's Grade 2, listed and still standing)

The one on Vicarage Rd was demolished after WW11 to make way for a new housing development.

Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome

Thanks

Di

Hello Di,

I'm not sure if you have seen these but there are 35 photos of Buntingford here:
http://www.francisfrith.com/buntingford/

The problem with photos of street scenes is that even if your house is included, it will be very hard to identify it. Do you know where the old house used to stand? (have you located it on an old map?) Of course if it was a vicarage you would expect it to be near the church, and it may be included in a photo of the church?  :-\

You could also try the local library/archives which may have taken photographs before the area was cleared.  :(

Hi Ruskie

Thanks for looking - I've checked the Frith pictures and unfortunately none show the Old Vicarage. I'm pretty sure that any picture would identify the place as the Vicarage. It was quite a landmark in it's time - on an enormous block of land and set well back from the road.

The local archives don't seem to reply to email requests but I might try them again.

Thanks

Di

When was the Old Vicarage demolished?

As far as I know it was after the war and probably 1950's - 1970s.

Apparently it was in a bad state at that time which is why it was demolished.

I'm not surprised that it was demolished in that time frame.  :(

As it was a relatively recent event, you would expect there to be some photos taken of it some time in the not too distant past.

I wonder if there is a local history group, or a "friends" of the church who may be able to help you ....  :-\

I have just received a pic of the Old Vicarage - compliments of someone who had a copy of a book about Buntingford.

Thrilled to bits - and it was a lovely old house

 ;D ;D ;D
