Vic shipping lists earlier than PROV
« on: Tuesday 21 February 12 11:49 GMT (UK) »
Are there shipping lists squirrelled away somewhere that are earlier than those which show on the PROV immigration on-line indexes?

According to TROVE the Duke of Portland arrived in Adelaide 3 August 1850,  http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/38450322
and in Melbourne 23 August 1850
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/4774179
Both articles give passenger lists but no details of the passengers, only their names.

PROV unassisted lists online only begin at 1852 and I cannot find any passengers from this ship on the PROV assisted list nor are they on the NSW online lists.

Hi Judith,

PROV guide 52 gives details of their holdings.  I think you will find that the passenger lists that have been indexed are the only ones that name passengers.

eg. VPRS 8794 Microfiche Register of Inward Shipping [Overseas and Intercolonial Ports] 1846 – 1852

This register records the arrival and departure of ships at the Port of Melbourne between 1846 and 1852.  Passengers are named in lists from January 1846 to October 1847.

Judith I wonder if NLA have the following publications....

HUGHES, Ian
Passengers to Port Phillip from Commonwealth and Foreign Ports, 1838-1851,
Passengers to Port Phillip from Southern England and Ireland, 1839-1842, 1843-1848, 1849-1851
Passengers to Port Phillip from Scotland, 1839-1851
Passengers to Port Phillip from Liverpool, 1839-1851
    Coastal Passengers to Port Phillip, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842, 1843

Cheers  :)

Many thanks Debra and Cando - will have a hunt at NLA.  This is sooooooooo frustrating!  The newspapers lists have slightly different names and some different folk on each list (of course, they could have got off/on in Adelaide before sailing on to Melbourne)

Blessings on you, Cando - your encyclopaedic knowledge wins again  :)    I found the Hughes booklet and found the family. The Ships List seemed to have the same passenger list as the Adelaide TROVE reference, but Mr Hughes had the Christian names.

Terric result Judith....The Ships List passenger list was transcribed from the Adelaide Register and I think from memory, the Assisted Passenger records at either SA Records or SLSA.
