Graham/Shackleton
« on: Tuesday 21 February 12 11:59 GMT (UK) »
I'm am trying to sort out the anomaly between Job H Shackleton (1845-1880) who married Jane Ann Hope (1846-1908)  and the fact that his maid, Harriet Lawson was the apparent mother of Eveline Beatrice Shackleton (1878-1960).  She married Robert John Graham (1871-1942)
All the docs seem to point to JA Hope but the rumour persists.

Hi,

1881 census has an Eveline B Shackleton living with parents John H and Jane A along with 2 older and 2 younger siblings in Bishop Wearmouth.  There is also Mary Hevvers, a servant. John's occupation is a commercial traveller.

Is this your Eveline B Shackleton?

RG11  4997   95    6

In 1891 the family shows Jane as a widow but joined by another daughter born 1883.

Possible death of Job Henry Shackleton in 1886, age given as 42, which would match a birth year of 1845.

Who registered the birth of Eveline? It was illegal to give false information at a birth registration but it did happen.  (In 1901 Jane is a registrar!)

What documents/family info says that Harriet Lawson was Eveline's mother?

Thank you all.

The family did live at 16 Tavistock Place.  Job H Shackleton was a master confectioner and travelled around selling his wares.  He was married to Jane A Hope and she took over the job of Register of BDM from her father William.
The mystery is that on Eveline Beatrice Graham's death Certificate (78/60) shows she died on 3 January 1960.  Father Job H Shackleton, Mother Harriet Lawson.  Some has written on the top corner 'b. 7 April1877'.  Her daughter Eveline Beatrice Graham's BC shows that she was born in Sunderland in 1877 and married 12 december 1901 to Robert John Graham.
Harriet Lawson was a maid.  Was E. B Shackleton Job's daughter with Harriet or Harriet's daughter with an unknown that the Shackletons decided to raise as their own?
We don't have EB's BC. which may help throw some light on what happened.

Hi,

This looks like Eveline's birth registration:

Eveline Beatrice Shackleton   JunQ 1877  Sunderland  10a  697

The details of Eveline's death certificate (not an English/Welsh one ?) could have been a guess by the informant.

Yes it is an Australian Death Certificate and the 'informant' was her eldest brother, Norman Hope Graham, who you would think may have known.  It was his son Roy Graham who first alerted us to the anomaly, when he found some notes in Norman hand saying that Eveline's mother was Harriet Lawson.  The DC confirmed that.

With out suggesting anything, we think we know that Norman grandmother registered Eveline birth.

We will be in Sunderland this coming April and will try to get a copy of the certificate.  Thanks.

Hi,

Is Norman Hope Graham the son of Eveline Beatrice Shackleton and Robert John Graham?
