Hi clearly,

That's how I see it; apart from the reference to "eldest brother Norman Hope Graham".......being the informant on the death certificate.      :-\

Hmm
I think we need to wait until Maxk wakes up on the other side of the world to get some clarification.

Hi thank you everyone.  Checked the Death Cert (78/60) registered 14 January 1960 at Perth, for Eveline Beatrice Graham nee Shackleton.  She died 3 Jan 1960.

Definitely says 'Father Job H Shackleton Confectioner, Mother Harriet Lawson.
EB was married on the 12 December 1901 in Durham to Robert John Graham.
Children from the marriage Norman Hope (56), Gordon Malcolm (53), Alan Shackleton (49)
William H (45), Eveline Beatrice (35) [No mention of Mavis who died under 12 months and was apparently not registered.
Remember that Jane Ann hope shows on Norman and Gordon's BCs as the register of BDM in Sunderland.  She is Job Shackletons wife who took over from her father William.

Harriet Lawson is apparently mentioned in one document as a household servant, although I can't find it.  On the 1881 census EB is three and the servant is Mary Hevvers.  I dont have the 1871 census.

There is a pencil note on the death Cert for Allan Shackleton Graham (I think by his oldest brother Norman Hope Graham), that his mother's (EB) mother was Harriet Lawson.

I agree that it is unlikely that Jane Ann Hope et al would have falsified the records particularly as she is the registrar.  (Although as the cynics say who better to cover up her husbands indiscretion.) They may also have given EB their name to save Harriet embarrassment and to give EB a good home.  Unless we can find some other evidence we will go back to Jane anne as mother as the dominant docs say that.
Thank you again.

Sorry we have been out of range.

Does anyone have any thoughts about how I could proceed from here?

I have no experience of Australian certs but the Registrar did not ask for any proof other than the paperwork from the hospital when I registered my mother's death in Dorset.

My gt. grandmother's death certificate shows her as "widow of........" but she never married my gt. grandfather;  all 10 of their childrens' birth certs also show her as his wife.

Information on certificates can sometimes be unreliable for a variety of reasons.

Have you looked for a Will for Job Shackleton?  It might refer to Eveline.    :-\

There is one in the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar for a Job Henry Shackleton who died 27 September 1886, Durham.
