Joseph CAUDWELL, Victoria 1852?
« on: Tuesday 21 February 12 13:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all. We have a Tasmanian convict, Joseph CAUDWELL, b. 1794, who was recommended for pardon on 12 Aug 1851. After 1850, his family in England lost contact with him and presumed him dead. His son, Joseph Lowe CAUDWELL, emigrated to gold-rush Victoria, arriving 27/8/1852.

Trove shows a CAUDWELL travelling to Melbourne in September 1852. Could that be Joseph Snr?

Any help with BDM's appreciated.

Cheers
Nudge

Hi nudge,

Have a look at Tas. departures - J. CORDWELL, free by servitude, arrived in Tas. on the London.  Is that him?

I am assuming you have all the information in Victoria about your several related JOSEPH CAUDWELL's

This is the birth of one-
CANDWELL Joseph Lowe
Father Joseph
Mother Mary Jane SHAW
Birth Place EMER
Year 1854
Reg Number 2055

This JOSEPH LOWE had siblings and on none of the listings I see is the father given the second name LOWE, being simply JOSEPH.

This son married

CAUDWELL Joseph Lowe
COUTIE Emily Charlotte
His Birth Place MELB
Year1887
Reg Number 1856

There were a number of children.

Thanks all, had forgotten about that thread. sorting them out, we have:

Joseph CAUDWELL b. 5//11/1794 South Wingfield, Derbyshire. Married Anne LOWE. Convicted of horse stealing 1844, sentenced to 10 years in VDL. Whereabouts not known after 1851.

Joseph Lowe CAUDWELL b. 28/4/1822 South Normanton, Derbyshire. Married Mary Jane SHAW. Emigrated to Victoria 1852; d. 29/7/1889 Mentone, Victoria.

Joseph Lowe CAUDWELL II b. 16/5/1854 Panton Hill, Victoria. Married Emily Charlotte COUTIE. d. 4/7/1928 Mentone, Victoria

I think that ex-con J. CORDWELL on the ship Mercury in 1852 is our Joseph CAUDWELL.
