1890 census problem
« on: Tuesday 21 February 12 14:26 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking info on a Thomas Armstrong, born Carlisle England in 1867, moved to Middlesbrough, England by 1881, then appeared to vanish.  However have now come across his death back in Middlesbrough in 1899 - in between he was apparently in Hudson, South Dakota.
The US 1890 census could have answered many questions had it not been wiped out by fire and flood.   Anyone any ideas how I could proceed from here?

Many thanks,

      Gordon.

Hello! A South Dakota state census for 1895 is listed on Ancestry so you could check that.

Gosh Pat, that was quick !!!

Thanks very much for that pointer, just what I needed.   I'll keep my fingers crossed for a Good Samaritan.

Best wishes,

         Gordon.

I don't see him in the 1885 or 1895 South Dakota state census.  Did he have any other family with him there?

Hello Shelly,

I don't think he had family, certainly none is mentioned in the death notice of the Middlesbrough newspaper, which merely says "son of ....."   and   "late of Hudson, South Dakota, USA".    No wonder I could never find him in the 1891 UK census  :)

Very many thanks for taking the trouble to look up the SD census for me, I'm truly obliged,

Best wishes,

       Gordon.
