Trade Directories 1890-1908 NSW
« on: Wednesday 22 February 12 02:50 GMT (UK) »
Are there any trade directories with "Plasterers" available to search on line for New South Wales, and which include cities such as Newcastle and Armidale? If so could I be pointed in the right direction.

I have tried those listed on Ancestry.co.au but can't get to the trade listings, only individual names.

As I am looking for someone who may have changed his name it would be helpful to view the entirte listing for Plasterers and bricklayers.
any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

I assume you have looked at the Sands Directories  on Ancestry, but they are not as good as the microfische. I know this from personal examination.

I have found some websites which might be of use, but unfortunatley, the best things are the fische, and someof the wensites do not have any actual online info, but as I say, may be helpful

Hi Don
Our QFHS library has the following on CD in that time frame, which may be useful:
New South Wales Post Office Directory (Wise's) 1904
New South Wales Country Directory 1899-1900 (Hall).
New South Wales Country Trades Register 1898
New South Wales Post Office Directory 1900 (Wise)
New South Wales Country Directory 1895 (Hall's)

There may be others on m/fiche too.

If you like to PM me the details, I will try to have a look at them on Friday when I go to the library.

Hi DonL,

Just for your info, if you are looking at the Sands Directories on Ancestry you will see in the left hand menu a link to "Browse individual records".  If you click on that you get to choose a year, and then the links are to surnames.  Ignore the alphabetical letters and click on the first item which should say "Introduction" and this takes you to the very first page of the directory.  Within the first few pages there should be an index which includes a "Trades and Professions" section and page number.  As an example, Plasterers are on page 923 (image 358) in the 1895 directory.

Just a quick look and most of the tradespeople seem to be situated in Sydney itself, but of course still worth a look for your elusive gentleman.

Debra  :)

Hello Terry

I am unsure of the name I am after as searches under the name given on his marriage certificate of Albert Clarence LINDALE and of his named father Harry LINDALE have produce zero results. Both were supposed to be Plasterers ( I know Albert was as he was in this trade up to his death -  and was known as a Master Plasterer)

Somewhere along the line, probably before he married in 1908, Albert changed his name for reasons unknown. Albert was born c1881 so his father may have been born c1856. His father Harry or perhaps Nicolai, was reputed to be of Scandinavian ancestry while Albert claimed to have been born in Australia (Newcastle or Armidale)

So anything which looks like either of these persons as either Plasterers or Bricklayers would be much appreciated.

Cheers
