The record keeping was definitely dependant on the clergyman at the time.

Actually it was more likely to be the session clerk than the minister. Some of the record-keeping is indeed lamentable.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

My family (maiden) name is Ruglen, originally based in Aberdeen. Interested in speaking with any others with this name in their tree. Very few people with it.
