I am not sure which william it is, william t berners was in india, william hugh was married but lived around the right area. He also had something to do with the brewery trade and so did lizzie dad.  Francis and stuart where the only brothers that didn't die young.  Francis seems to have had a nice house when he was young so his dad must have been quite well off.  Still i will keep looking. thanks for your replies.

story in the family, not sure if it is true, that stewart and maybe francis tried to blackmail their father for some money.  Could only think that the only think they could blackmail him about is that he was married and they where his secret family.    Stuart fredrick alfred berners changed his name to curzon-berners (which was my name), but before him it was just berners, so was he trying to hide from something.  William hughes first daughter was called mabel, stuart fredrick also called his daughter mabel as well, just wondering if there was a connection. (thanks for reply mabel)

When people add a name it is sometimes to try to inherit money, not hide. Was it around 1930 they changed their name?

It made me think, so I looked for William Thomas Berners will-

William Thomas Berners of Queen Annes Mansions St.James Park westminster died 17/3/1930 probate 23/5/1930 to Westminster bank Ltd & Henry Charles Begg Esq. £510846-6-3d. This would have been over £17 million pounds in 2005, so he would have been more than able to afford to keep a mistress and family.

It is strange in 1891 census Lizzie is described as mother supported (does this suggest a kept woman)?

I would think there must be some sort of obituary for a man with his money?

my granfather was born in 1901, and on his birth certificate if says stuart alfred curzon berners, so stuart fredrick must of changed the name sometime before then.

my cousin told me that francis was there when both lizzie and athol died, i think she said he was the witness? on the death certificate.  Strange how the father was not involved at all when his wife (maybe) and son died.

William Thomas Berners married 20/8/1868 Parish Church Kilmainham Dublin

Address Gresham Hotel Dublin occ. Merchant -father Arthur - Gentleman (born 1803)
Charlotte Anna Whiteside  father John - Lt. Colonel

From London Gazzette - Henry Charles Begg lived 'Beechfield' Langley Road Watford Herts.
It looks like William T had one son Charles Henry - went to Tonbridge School & Eton.

There is a 17 yr old Henry Berners Begg on 1911 census born Calcutta.

Not convinced about William Hugh Berners.

He would only have been 21 when Lizzie's first child was born and he had married Edith K Townend in Brighton in 1866. When he died he only left £5121-9-11d. I know this was quite a sum in 1929 but nothing like the amount of William T. Lizzie would have to have been supported to some degree as she did not seem to have any other means of support.
