Malcolm McFarlane
« on: Friday 24 February 12 22:07 GMT (UK) »
G'day Folks!

I am after information on a marriage between Malcolm Mcfarlane and Ann Parker.

I am researching my family tree and have managed to get to the Death Certificate of my 4xGreat grandfather (Malcolm, b. 1805 d1875), whose aforementioned mother and father were mentioned.
FYI, the death certificate says he died at Causewayhead, Logie and was married to a Helen Christie, who evetually died in Glasgow. Also that his father's occupation was a seaman in the Royal Navy.

I am really stuck and on the oter side of the world (Australia), with nothing but a great distance and misbehaving technology in the middle.

Kind Regards and Thankyou in advance.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

There is no IGI entry for his parents marriage so the only other possibility is Scotlands People which is a paysite  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I did a basic search on the old parish registers on the above site and there is a Malcolm McFarlane marriage to an Ann in 1788 but entry does not give a positive return to surname Parker

Marriages for that period will give you very little info

INFORMATION IN AN OPR BANNS & MARRIAGES RECORD

Do not expect too much from OPR banns & marriages records. The amount of information recorded can be variable and most entries contain very little detail.

At best: date(s) of the proclamation of intended marriage and/or date of marriage, names of bride and groom and their parish of residence, sometimes the occupation of the groom and occasionally the name of the bride's father.
At worst:the names of the bride and groom recorded along with the fee paid in caution.

Thankyou very much, I have had a look on scotlands people website, have tried many (but probably not all) combinations.

I did find a will of a Malcolm McFarlane that was in the RN, but cannot read it very well. Do you know of anyone/any place that interprets stuff like this?

I also had found those records of the children too, as William was a Greatx3 grandfather up the line who then came to Australia.
Meanwhile I shall have a look at the marriage you found.

Thankyou again.

You could try the Rootschat Deciphering and Recognition board.  You would have to scan the parts you are having problems with and upload them

1851 census, Logie, Clackmannanshire
Malcolm McFarlan, 47, born Oben (sic transcription), Argyll, with wife Helen, 48, daughter Mary 16 and a visitor.

Seems to fit with Raye M's information.

You can, and should, look at the original census at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
