KING Henry (abt 1789-1854)
« on: Saturday 25 February 12 02:02 GMT (UK) »
Henry, my 3x ggrandfather, died at St Andrew the Less, Cambridgeshire on 28/4/1854 aged 65 according to the record of death. This makes his dob abt 1789.  1841 & 1851 census info suggests he was born anywhere between 1796 & 1810 so there is quite a large variation.  On 27/2/1823 he married Sarah Brand (born 17/4/1801 Bottisham) at St Andrew the Less and at the time of his death he was a publican/brewer. They had 8 children.
I am trying (in vain)to find his date of birth and also who his parents were.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Something doesn't tie up here! The 1851 census has Henry King as 41 years old and a Publican, but he couldn't have been married in 1823 as he would only have been 13 years old. Which facts are you certain about? Have you worked back from the children of the family as shown in the 1851 census?
regards.

Hello paco and thank you for replying.
You are quite right of course.  I had another look at the actual 1851 census record and there is evidence that his age was altered to 41; his wife Sarah is shown as 49, which would be about right.
Facts:  Date of Death 1854 showing age 65 therefore making date of birth 1789
           Date of Marriage 1823
Perhaps age on 1851 census should have been 61 which would make date of birth 1790.
Cheers,  Bill

You could try the FreeREG site, as there is quite a lot of info on Cambridge on there.

Henry, my 3x ggrandfather, died at St Andrew the Less, Cambridgeshire on 28/4/1854 aged 65 according to the record of death.

Burial at St Andrew the Less on 4 May 1854 of Henry King aged 67. You pays your money and you takes your pick!

It would have been helpful to have added that in 1851 his birthplace was given as Cambridge (not Cambridgeshire - other entries on the same page have Cambridgeshire written in full when there's a parish name other than Cambridge given)

Another random thought which may be a complete red herring is that in 1851 the previous family was George KING 27 b Ely, also a brewer, with wife Adelaide. I don't believe in coincidences (unless it suits me). Cambs Baptism Index 1801-37 at http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html shows a George King baptised in Ely in 1824, son of Charles and Hannah. Might there be a connection? Oh blow it, or some such similar expression! Adelaide was the daughter of Henry and Sarah, so there is a connection, but not the one I was hoping for. And it really must be a coincidence that Bill lives in Adelaide according to his profile.

Does anyone have the Baptism Index to see of he was baptised in one of the Cambridge parishes?

Thank you to everyone who responded to my query.
I had overlooked the fact that Henry was born in Cambridge, as pointed out by 'bedfordshire boy', and was interested also to learn that he was 67 according to burial record, making dob 1787.
On that basis the Henry born 2/12/1787 to parents Henry & Sarah looks a likely candidate; will research that family.
Cheers,  Bill (from Adelaide, and yes, that is a coincidence!.  The connection of George King marrying Adelaide King will be another interesting connection to have a look at)
