Cow Cross?

Added: And I think the other is Cow Lane.

Both were in the Smithfield area close to St Sepulchre. Cowcross St still exists; Cow Lane partly lost due to Holborn Viaduct but I think a fragment remains as Smithfield St.

That explains why he was called Thomas CROSS, that being where he was found. A foundling has no known birthdate or name or parents. They were frequently named by the person who found them, or often given names relating to the place where they were found or the time of year.

Thank you for the replies. I agree, my first thought was that he was a foundling, and Cow Cross might explain how they knew his "name".
